Rain Man (1988)
Most ableist movie ever made
As an autistic teen, filmmaking is my special interest. I've become a sort of savant on the subject so I while searching around, I found rain man and decided to leave a review after watching.
I'd like to point out that people have always lauded Dustin Hoffman's performance as revolutionary and beautiful. In reality it is so damn easy to rock back and forth and talk like a robot. Stop saying this is the best acting performance ever!
The biggest problem with rain man is that it portrays an autistic person as a savant machine who lacks empathy. This reinforces incredibly hurtful stereotypes that contribute to disability discrimination more than 30 years later. In fact, the term rainman has become something of a slur towards high needs autistic people.
The end of the movie was the worst part, you have Tom Cruises character pretty much learning "maybe autistic people do have feelings. Maybe they aren't mindless animals."
In conclusion, this movie pisses me off, I hate seeing a disabled man being taken advantage of for an hour and a half. And I hate seeing everyone say this movie is the best ever.
Thanks for reading. Have a nice say.
Thelma the Unicorn (2024)
Best animated movie in a while!
Lemme start by saying I'm a huge fan of Jared Hess. I love all his work. I was excited to learn he was directing an animated movie as I love the Napoleon Dynamite animated series.
The music, the original songs were surprisingly fantastic. I was shocked that every single song was great which is rare for an animated musical. Brittany Howard has a perfect voice for Thelma.
The plot and pacing was strong, with good character development without ever feeling boring and the theme carries a powerful feel good message
This movie features voice acting from many of Hess' past stars like Zach Galifianakis, Will Forte, Jemaine Clement, and John Heder, all of who add a nostalgic touch to the film. Clement's Vic Diamond was hilarious and reminded me of the Colonel from Baz Lurhman's Elvis.
Conclusion, this movie was a refreshing and unique entry into the streaming world and I really enjoyed it. It's funny and entertaining for kids and adults alike, and I hope you get to watch it.
Thanks for reading.
Hugo (2011)
Without a doubt the worst Scorsese movie
I'll start with the positive. The movie was aesthetically brilliant with beautiful cinematography and set design. Solid acting performances from Ben Kingsley and Jude law.
Now the negative. Hugo was single-handedly the most boring movie I've ever seen. People pretend this movie is good just to seem like artsy fartsy little dweebs and kiss the hand of Scorsese. I guessed the predictable ending 10 minutes into the movie and then had to sit through 2 more hours of Asa Butterfield farting around Paris to fix some stupid looking robot.
Conclusion: Let's be honest here. Nobody INCLUDING the master director Martin Scorsese himself has watched this movie twice. My heart goes out to the editing team who had to sit through thousands of hours of this so called "Love letter to cinema" to try and fix the unfixable.
