Aftersun (2022)
Emperors new clothes...
This had a load of hype attached to it but I got frustrated with it very quickly. It takes ages to get going and maybe doesn't actually go anywhere at all, at least not fast enough for my liking. Frankie Corio is brilliant. No arguments there. And I know Paul Mascal is great because Normal People had me hooked from start to finish, largely down to his performance. But this is Emperors new clothes as far as I'm concerned. If you personally connected with it or had some experience with the issues raised, then credit to you. This is clearly your kind of film. It just left me confused and more than a little annoyed to be hit with the hype wagon that made me go and see it.
Pretty Red Dress (2022)
Enjoyable... if not predictable
Alexandra Burke is just brilliant in this. I am often sceptical when someone that isn't naturally an actor dips their toes into trying to act but I really think Alexandra has a future in films and I hope this serves as an introduction to her talents. However the film itself possibly lets her down in places. I thought it was a little predictable and therefore disappointing at times. That is not to say that I didn't enjoy it and I would recommend seeing it. I suppose it helps if you're a Londoner and would maybe find it a little more relatable. Very sweary throughout, which has its place in some films yet seems gratuitous in others. I was really curious about this one but overall a good experience.
Wait for Me (2023)
Beautifully written
This was a really powerful film, more so than I was expecting it to be. Uncomfortable to watch at times and remains edgy. The story is strong and the revelations held my attention throughout. A couple of scenes were uncomfortable to watch due to their raw honesty. Sean McGinley and Karen Hassan were stand out for me as the father and daughter with the most complex relationship. She is very convincing as the woman with nothing left to lose and the finale kept me tense throughout. It has a very satisfying payoff too. The opening scene was like being hit by a hammer as it escalates the shock level. Very clever writing.
