The Drop (2014)
A no frills, slow burn, old school thriller
This is my kinda film! A no frills, slow burn, old school thriller with some terrific performances!
I've just finished a binge watch of Taboo so it was a nice change of pace to see Hardy dial things down and not rely on his usual bag of tricks - usually the most intimidating guy on screen, he works hard here to become almost invisible and it's an effective, layered performance. Its not easy to find a formidable screen presence to intimidate Hardy but Matthias Schoenaerts is up the task, cranking up the unhinged menace throughout!
The standout though is a final role for the mighty James Gandolfini, this guy did so much with just a look! I'd have watched a full movie of him and Ann Dowd as brother and sister!! He is one of the all time greats!
Asteroid City (2023)
WOW
WOW i wanna live in this movie so bad like soooo bad!!! It was so beautiful and so much fun and AHHH!!!! Ngl the alien part made me tear up!! Just being able to watch something this beautiful and loving is such a treat. Wes just knowsss what hes doing. Everything was perfect. It may just be recency bias but....it might be my fav wes anderson movie!! But ill have to see it again. UGH the color palette and the sets and the theatrical aspects oh my god its just all so masterful. It makes me remember why i love movies so much.
Also this is the hottest any of these actors have ever looked, i will not take any comments at this time.
The Grey (2011)
underrated gem
An underrated gem from Joe Carnahan that I think suffered from mis-marketing upon release, trying to capitalize on Neeson's action star run.
This is a meditative adventure/drama with a great ensemble - a standout turn from Frank Grillo who goes toe-to-toe with Neeson (in one of his strongest performances)!
Impressive location shooting, a great score and thrilling action scenes that ratchets up the tension as the crew are picked off by the wolfpack!
It was a bit heavy on the existential angst that was sometimes out of place, but overall it just helped develop the characters and give a meaningful back story in between the action packed escape scenes through the tundra.
No Hard Feelings (2023)
Andrew Barth Feldman!!
Just came home from the cinema watching it and OMG this was soooo good!!! Soooo funny, I love the part when Maddie came out the pool from skinny dipping and starting beating those kids who took her clothes naked!! (I didn't expect to see nipples!) also the part when Percy was nude on the hood of the car, sooo crazy!
The scene when Percy sings in the restaurant (Andrew Barth Feldman), I think a star is born, he was incredible. I was sure if it was really him who played the piano or movie magic but he is extremely talented (watched some YouTube videos on the way home)
nd OMG the whole theatre laughed once Percy had sex for 2 seconds and finished too quickly! And he was like "Did you come too?" AHAHAHAHAHA! (Still counts imo)... Happens to us all.
Dirty Water (2023)
Slow start but brilliant!
I thought the first episode wasn't as funny, it was still decent, enough to get me to watch the 2nd episode which was really funny. The banter between Boab and Kaitlin was very natural, like they have been friends forever (even although they're always at each other).
There's a character McShane who appears in all 3 episodes a little but I hope to more of him in future episodes as he's got something, weirdly engaging.
Probably my favourite is Auld Craw, a dopey loveably idiot. Wait to you see the suit he got for £12 out the charity shop. The boss and the team leader have good comedy chemistry and there's a barmaid Jessica who has just moved to the city for a fresh start, she beautiful, smart and although she's caught the eye of Boab, I'm not exactly sure where her storying is going.
All in all, this feels like just the intro of a new series one of which I'm excited to see more of. I hope Sky have more out soon.
