The Robber Bride (2007)
read the book
First of all, I didn't actually sit through the entire film. This is mainly because I sat down very excited about seeing a movie version, as I absolutely love the novel. However, it seemed to me that they were changing the entire story and for no reason. (You know how there are logical changes made whenever filmmakers translate a book into a movie? The changes made to The Robber Bride made absolutely no sense.) Having realized just how much they changed it about 45 minutes into the film, I then turned it off. I think that it might be a good film if you watch it without reading the novel, because it seems to play with interesting elements and they've put in this whole mystery/crime-solving storyline. Since I didn't see the movie all the way through, I don't want to condemn it outright. Also, the acting was good. I just think the book was so excellent and the changes detract from what the book, to me, was expressing.
Wild Wild West (1999)
Why does nobody seem to like this film?!?
I was amazed to read all the negative comments regarding this movie. I loved it! I found it funny, witty and overall very well done. Will Smith is excellent in the part of Jim West, the trigger-happy smart talking cowboy, as is Kevin Kline in the part of Artemis Gordon, the genius master of disguise. But the man who really steals the show is Kenneth Branagh in the part of the evil mastermind Dr. Loveless. He creates humour in the role of the cold-blooded criminal, as well as keeping the character's part as a 'southern gentleman'. The word-play between Loveless and West is fabulous, and the friendship that grows between West and Gordon is developed nicely. The only problem I really have with this film is Selma Hayek's character. It's like the directors were thinking, 'hey, we need a chick in this film, you know, so we have, like, sexual tension and stuff.' and had her written in. She just doesn't seem to fit that well. Overall, this movie gets a 9 out of 10 from me and I advise you to watch it.
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)
A great action flick
What can I say about the Indiana Jones movies? I love them all. This one is my favourite, simply because it was the first one I watched and it drew me in to the whole Indiana Jones story. The kid who played Shortround is absolutely amazing! So much better than some other child actors who can be annoying and fake. The movie combines action, humour and fast-paced escapes in a way that only an Indiana Jones film can. I might be a little biased, because I love Harrison Ford no matter what movie he's in, but I still think the criticism that this film has received is unfair, and altogether false! All in all, I highly recommend this movie, and give it ***** out of ***** stars.
Willow (1988)
A fantasy classic
i first saw Willow when i was 8, and although it scared me quite a bit, it remains to this day one of my favourite movies. To those who speak of the obvious similarities between Willow and LoTR, i think that it's hard not to make a fantasy movie that is entirely different from LoTR. This is simply because of how influential LoTR has been on the fantasy world. And while there are similarities, the story of Willow is unique and has its own special charm. The weird grotesque dogs instilled a fear that no other movie quite matched, and the element of humour in Willow sets it apart from other fantasy movies.
