Bubba Ho-Tep (2002)
I just don't see it
I don't know, I just don't see it.... A huge part of the movie consists of close up of the character's faces. Our hero wears really bad make up, that make his face look more artificial, then how it's supposed to look - just old. So overall visuall is a rather unpleasant watch, if you don't watch it from distance.
The movie also has some bad special effects, that are for the most part practical. The humour wasn't that great either. For me personally this movie is very slow and I definitely didn't like the ending that felt very cliche, bland. I thought it would be at least more entertaining, given the ratings it has.
Beyond Skinwalker Ranch (2023)
Wow this show is beryond bad.
I was excited at the first episode when we were introduced to two interesting new crew members, and the theories behind each episode are pretty interesting, but soon you realize every episode is the same. Mind-blowing equipment data, but poor experiementation methods, and absolutely zero closure every time. Like they don't even bother to take a road that would lead into actually something. There was one guy that said he caught a skinwalker, and the crew went oooh really?!, but in reality he just startled him, he was just bad at expressing himself, and the team never mentioned this sensationalistic phrase again that he "caught" one. Then there was one instance where they "supposedly" found the nest of skinwalkers at Satan's Butte. Like there is a native village nearby where skinwalkers are the order of the day. And we as viewers are expecting to see something idk, something more than nothing this time. But the crew is scared and the wind starts blowing all of a sudden, and after reading some intruments data they just decide "this is enough" and they flee the place just before the skinwalkers allegedly manifest themselves.
Even more, they say afterwards "Us researching into skinwalkers apparently made them scared, they don't want people talking about them, and since we were there, no more skinwaker episodes occured at the native village" Oh, so convenient.
The whole show was a waste of time.
Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens (1922)
Absolutely overrated horror movie for these times.
It might have been amazing and scary back in the day. But today watching such an old product of early cinema with mute dialogue, for me personally it's just not very appealing. I watched it through multiple viewings, because I kinda forced myself to not fall asleep.
Boring. I just don't see the appeal of it all. I mean, yes I know about the iconic, cult status, but this alone was never enough for me to enjoy a movie.
Shadow of the Vampire, on the other hand it's somehow of a more modern take of Nosferatu, with a similar setting and brilliant twist and mystery is much much better product, personally for me especially in these modern times.
Speak No Evil (2022)
Very cruel, but lacking something important, imo.
Like most of the times I went to see this movie without knowing anything about it. Boy oh boy, what his a cruel and traumatic movie, the last part of it. I was not expecting it to be as such.
Spoilers!
-----------------
-----------------
The movie ending was very cruel, and had no redeeming factor whatsoever, that's in my opinion the biggest problem with it. I was waiting for the moment of revenge, and it just didn't happen. It's such a hopeless, I'd say, traumatic movie.
But the hoplessness isn't palpable until the last 20 minutes or so. Up until that point, the stuff that's going on is not exceptional, nothing extreme. If I think about it, it's pretty much a drag but still it's not boring, you feel a sense of danger throughout, like any time something horrible could happen. However as I said, the movie is traumatic, so you've been warned.
ReMastered: Devil at the Crossroads (2019)
I had more fun watching...
I had more fun watching the random documentaries about this case on youtube years ago. This documentary kinda kills the supernatural mystery of the story, I mean not exactly kills, but puts very little emphasis on the straordinariety of the story, which is what fascinates me most in the first place, and focus instead on a more mundane explanation for it all.
The Endless (2017)
Just like its predecessor Resolution (2012)
I have wateched Resolution (2012) some five years ago and I thought it was absolutely overrated for what I got from it. It was a mess. I hated that film...
And then I hear about The Endless, that's allegedly a new revolutionary horror movie and what not... I gave it a chance, full of hype hoping to see some Sci-Fi horror movie, because I did not want to watch the trailer to not spoil anything So I went in completely blind. I did not know the movies were even connected, and after finishing watching The Endless, it sucked, I hated it. After reading some reviews later I learned the two movies are actually connected... So my taste just confirmed to me on two separate occasions that both movies are awful.
Book of Monsters (2018)
Based on the positive reviews I am wondering if we watch the same movie...?
Because the movie I watched was really bad. Bad dialog, bad acting, bad story script with every cliche in the book... and for the most part also surprisingly bad practical effects. However, I can see that a lot of effort has been put into making this movie, because simply there was much work to be done, lots of things happen and lots of props are used, but in my opinion it came out as a total mess, such as one cannot take seriously. The movie is not even funny or scary, and overall it seems to be severely lacking of a quality control of any kind.
But ok, I'll have to admit that not everything is bad about the movie. Some practical effects came out better than others, the artist that made the book also did a decent job. The camera work was pretty good, the lighting, the atmosphere was decent too. Also I'd say the acting was only 75% bad. And too bad they just had to cram in LGBT propaganda.... Initially, I rated it 4 for the effort, but now taking in consideration the irritability factor I had to go through to watch this whole mess of a thing, I just decided to rate it 3 stars.
The Dark and the Wicked (2020)
This is a pretty awful horror movie
I'm not gonna lie, this horror movie was pretty awful. It is boringly slow and features a lot of snoozing silent scenes that are soon broken up by loud screams, to wake you up from snoozing, and even louder telephone with the most annoying ringing that no one ever answers. So typical from horror directors they literally enjoy torturing your ears, it's obvious at this point.
But not only that, the story itself that is just ugly, and also kinda artsy-fartsy and cheap. Cheap, in the sense that there has just not been put much effort to make the movie somehow meaningful and, god forbid, entertaining. Everything is just so easily solved with some demonic hallucinations that come out of nowhere and this happens all the time. It's a movie that makes you feel bad, almost insulted, like the director is toying with your attention and perception all the time. It's not even entertaining, because inevitably you will start hating him.
I don't know why anyone would enjoy watching such a movie. It's an ugly story with an ugly rural and dark setting full of depression and desperation. It also features that, now cliche, annoying ugly woman with her crying face on all the time, that makes it so much harder to watch. Kinda like The Babadook, but overall, also very strongly reminecent of movies like the VVitch and Hereditary.
However the quality of the movie is good, the actors are decent, the camera work is interesting, and the movie is definitely trying hard to be serious, so props to that.
But did I actually enjoy the movie?
No, ...not at all.
Legends of the Deep (2019)
I enjoyed the show but...
I enjoyed the show, and I think we need more of shows researching various anomalies around the world and especially underwater. This documentary mini-series is definitely more about the journey than the destination, and I still had a good time watching it.
The things I liked about show:
- The stories of legends and mysteries behind each episode are very intriguing
- I liked the underwater footage
- The mysterious vibe of the stories combined with spooky scenarios is a great formula for the show, so it's entertaining.
- I also enjoyed the various routes the show took, such as collecting further evidence, interviewing eyewitnesses or people who knows about the legends in an attept to come closer to solve the mysteries.
The things I didn't like about the show:
- The show seems more oriented towards surviving every minute under water than it is on exploration alone. There is always mortal danger in every step they do. So usually as soon as they get to the bottom of the sea and look around a bit they already have to resurface.
- The episodes feel scripted. The music sometimes it too over the top to accentuate the drama, the dialogues, the camera positions most of the time don't feel natural or genune at all, also there to cause more drama. In the end it feels more like a movie than an actual documentary.
- The show could have more episodes, there are only 4.
- Nothing interesting is ever found, except in the very last episode.
Now, I know that these episodes are quite demanding to make, very budget-consuming and not to mention pretty dangerous, as well. Another good thing I have to mention is that all 4 episodes of the show are available to watch for free on Legends of the deep official facebook page, even if not in the best video quality :)
Deep (2017)
I think this movie is pretty underrated
While this movie is not made by animation giants such as Disney Pixar, dreamworks etc., it's pretty well done, very atmospheric and entertaining. It's even creepy at times. The humour may not always be the funniest, there are some fart jokes, and the singing feels a bit out of place. Although it's not totally terrible and there is not much of it, thankfully. But I think this one is underrated cause it's a pretty decent animation movie. The plot is simplistic, yet adventureous, the charachter are pretty much one-dimensional but I think this suits the setting well, since they are marine creatures after all. I also liked the design of the creatures, definitely nicely designed. I especially liked Alice the shrimp.
Overall, It had it's moments, and after reading so many negative reviews I was expecting something really trashy. Lastly I would say there were some logical fallacies anda few continuity problems, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't always accurate from a biologists standpoint either. For starters I'm sure the dumbo octopus is cannot be a giant squid's grandson. But I stand at my opinion that this movie is underrated and entertaining nonetheless. Also, it had an interesting setting, I mean how many animated movies have we seen about the mighty fascinating deep sea creatures? I say give this movie a chance.
Hollow (2011)
A great location doesn't guarantee a great movie by itself...
The filming location they chose was downright eerie, some abandoned medieval ruins with a huge and very creepy tree. This one of the few reasons that makes me wish to say that this movie had potential, but unfortunately, the location itself gets very little screen time, compared to the dull mess that surrounds it - i.e. the rest of the film. Another good thing is the back story, it was kind of creepy, not very elaborated... but if it was, it could be pretty memorable.
The movie features four unlikable characters and close to zero filmmaking talent which includes downright boring and uneventful camera angles, especially for a found footage movie genre. They, the camera angles are simply not very exciting, while they could have easily been. Besides that, I should also mention annoying dialogues, mediocre acting, lots of random screaming and pretty stupid character decisions. Oh, and darkness, lots of it. Because darkness is free and it's also scary.
But overall, the whole movie was just boring and dull, and it's not much of a spoiler to say that literally, almost nothing happens until the end. The whole experience to me felt annoying, so much so, that I regret almost every minute I spent watching it, except for bits with the creepy medieval ruins and that tree. That was quite creepy.
On a final note, throughout the majority of the movie I just couldn't shake off this vibe it was giving me. Something about four drunk friends having this brilliant idea of making a quick buck with almost zero effort and talent, clearly betting their winning horses on the creepy location alone. Which is akin to asking "Why was the Blair Witch Project so successful?" and getting the reply "Because it was filmed in some creepy woods"...
This found footage no budget movie is the debut of an unknown director who clearly didn't have any idea how to make a movie even remotely entertaining or scary. The creepiness of it is all thanks to the location. It starts right off with a tragic epilogue, we get to see the footage of a police officer filming and commenting on a tragedy that just happened under some creepy tree, although, the director didn't really care to add anything to that scene to make stand out or simply it more interesting. Then the camera cuts off to one of the most clichéd beginnings for a horror movie since ever, showing us some people in a car going on a vacation together to the creepy English countryside. Not that there is anything wrong with that kind of opening, other than the fact that is just used way too often. I guess it's because of its proprieties, it is a fairly neutral way to start a movie and also a one that is open to a multitude of potential scenarios.

Which is particularly sad in this case, because it became soon clear that they didn't know what to do with the amazing location they were given.
Also sad is the fact that this movie boasts a proud rating of 6.1 on IMDb, but it doesn't take a genius really to understand the ratings were faked.
I give it 2 out of 10 stars just for the location they chose, and the story they tried to coin together. It's like the movie wanted to be the next Blair Witch Project, but it was way too little and way too late. And a great location alone doesn't guarantee a great movie by itself. Personally, I would love to see a competent movie utilizing the same location, I think that would be amazing in fact.
Needle (2010)
Had a big potential but...
But the lame accents, quiet dialogues, some sleep-inducing sequences and misleading plot about who stole the box really annoyed me, especially the last part. Why are we shown Mary, the protagonist's girlfriend kinds, taking a last glance at the box under the bed? I was sure that Mary stole it. I thought that the director wanted to let us know this simple fact. But throughout and especially by the end of the movie, if we follow that simple fact, nothing makes sense. So I think the director wanted to mislead us intetionally, but it was done in such a way that feels like he was trolling the viewers. I feel a bit insulted honestly, I had to go through all that confusion, where there should be none.
That being said, the movie had potential, from the, cinematic perspective it was beaufitully shot, The box was very pretty and an interesting device, the actors were good, if they only talked more clearly. The gory effects were for the major part pretty well done, although, in a couple instances the blood kinda looked like ketchup just smeared on the victim's bodies. I'm confused about the rating because honestly it was half boring and half entertaining. So I'll give it a 5 out of 10.
Legion (2010)
It is a bad movie uses every cliché in the book of clichés
I really wanted to like this movie, but I couldn't
I just saw it, and apart from a few scenes that stand out, it was pretty mediocre action-horror flick. Unoriginal poor story, messy and had unlikable stupid characters, boring dialogues, a vague explainaton, silly fighting coreography (is this the matrix?), poor interpretations of and angelic beings and their powers, continuity errors - it's all there. These people were supposed to survive a whole month in that diner... So did they just survive a month trapped in there waiting for the baby? I don't think so, the movie just skipped this whole thing. But if I'm brutally honest It felt just like I have watched a longer episode of Supernatural TV series, one of the later episodes when it got super dull. While watching Legion I was constantly reminded of so many other movies, it's hard to keep track of , they literally used every cliché in the book of clichés. In conclusion, I have to say the possessed granny scene was pretty cool, and the one with the annoying mom getting shut up was also a nice redeeming factor, and even that one reminded me strongly of Stephen King's The Mist. It had potential, indeed, but in the end left us with nothing to write home about.
The Real Chainsaw Massacre (2003)
Medicocre documentary about the alleged real story behind the movie
It's a pretty medicocre documentary about the alleged real story behind the movie.... Or should I say two elements the movie took from the real story. In fact the only connections this story has with the movie is that it happened in Texas and that the killer supposedly get rid of two corpses as he did get rid of his animal rests after they being hunt down, that was not proven tho. But the documentary does not talk about the movie and doesn't even mention Ed Gein, instead focuses on the life of the killer after he went to live in the UK. This documentary feels half-assed and pompous, just by its title alone.
The Babadook (2014)
My honest opinion? A pretentious pile of pure trash. Hard to watch.
The Mother was a hysterical wreck and the son was an annoying wreck ball, loud an obnoxious, hard to endure, honestly. The monster was made of cardboard and animated in stop-motion with a very few CGI inserts. All this trash wrapped up neatly into a garbage bag of psychological metaphors with a ribbon on top. Nah, I don't buy it for a second, it's still pure trash.
Downrange (2017)
Amazingly Awful
Movie starts slow and boring. When things starts going on becomes incredibly stupid from the moment the first victim is killed. It goes on continuing to be super stupid with it's acting and character decision-making, which is absolutely abysmal.
And to think it's from the same director that made a bunch of great horror movies. The movie visually looks good, I like how it happens during daylight. The gore and blood effects are surprisingly well done. But all this stupidity is something I can hardly take. It's just too much, you keep on thinking, is this movie a bad joke? Is this movie's objective just to make me wish all the characters to die? WTF is this? Everybody in this movie is incredibly stupid, and literally mean everybody! This makes it PAINFUL to watch. It's been a while since I saw such a stupid movie. The last one must have been Beneath 2013, the one with the killer fish. Beyond Stupid!
Demon House (2019)
A boring and really un-entertaining watch
So I decided to check out this movies since I like found footage horror movies and this was rated above 7, here on imdb at the time. The trailer was humble, nothing too revealing but it built up the hype and picked my interest. Then later I saw the movie. It was boring, it was nothin more than a longer episode of ghost hunter tv show stuff kind of thing, which I never watch. Cause they are too fake for me to take seriously. So in this movie basically nothing happens and it happens at slug piece. Then I undertood why therailer was so humble, there was literally nothing to show. The movie is ful of cheap excuses and background stuff we never get to see so we can only believe... or not? Honestly I don't believe to what was told to us in the movie, I have seen to many horror movies by now claiming to be a true story and whatnot, that revealed to be a hoax later that at this point I don't even care. So if a horror movie claims to be a true story, it's more of a minus for me than a plus basically. The times of the Blair Witch Project hype kind of movies are long gone and as I said building up the hype in such a way us just another lame excuse to make you want to see the movie. In the end what can I say, this movie is boring an it's also overrated like hell.
Possession (1981)
This movie could be so much better, it had definitely had potential
I heard a lot of good things about it but I was procrastinating the watch for some reason, my subconscious already knew why apparently. Jokes aside, this movie was annoyingly ridiculous to me. She was beautiful, he an awesome actor, the atmosphere screamed Polanski all over it, and I thought what could go wrong, right?
Well, first of all, her acting was terrible and annoying when she played the role of Anna. I could literally picture in my mind in most scenes how the director behind the scenes screaming to her "now roll over, be more insane, do this do that", such a feeling I had when I watched the annoying Babadook kid acting out too. They both did a bad acting job IMO and or maybe it was the director's fault. I can see the director as some kind of visionary megalomaniac, clearly inspired by Polanski. That being said, the movie didn't make much sense nor it explained anything. It was long and boring, but if it was made better, even with the same elements but placed more logically, could have been good. I also like the Lovecraftian overtone that it has.
I'm actually surprised that I disliked the movie. I mean I didn't actually dislike it, I was intrigued to a degree but at the same time I was put off, because I was constantly seeing the missed potential. I don't know, I may be wrong, perhaps I'm doing injustice to the movie, but I was ultimately disappointed. I felt like the director was improvising badly, and he did that a lot.
As I said, this movie could be better. It was too vague and artsy to be considered an actually enjoyable and entertaining horror movie, but it is not that far from it either, so I have very mixed feelings about it and that's why I rated it 5 out of 10 stars.
Beneath (2013)
This movie is an insult to our intelligence!
I'm one of those guys who like aquatic horror theme a lot. First I've seen the trailer, which looked fun enough, then I've seen this movie here is rated 3.8, I thought it's an ok-ish rating for a monster movie since most monster movies, in general, get bad ratings. No love for the monsters eh? And we definitely need more GOOD aquatic horror movies!
I know the general public is picky about movies, so I thought if people rated it almost 4, maybe I could rate is a solid 5? And then I watched the movie. With each step further I could not believe the dumbness of the script. I could see my rating drop to 3 immediately and then to 2, but at the very end, I already knew it was a rotten 1. I was seriously mindblown by the dumbness I was witnessing for every move each of the characters took. It was really hard to take all in and I was wondering why the actors didn't protest? They indeed should've protested for having to act out such a dumb script.
I wanted to go through the movie and point out all the dumb things, but it's pretty pointless at this point, there are too many and much has been already said about them. It was a disaster man, even if the blood effects and the fish prop was pretty cool it could not convince me to give it a 2 ot of 10, and I rarely give such a bad score to a movie, if ever.
But I seriously think this was the dumbest movie I have ever seen, all their effort in my eyes was annihilated because of how bad the script was. This movie is an insult to our intelligence! Given the same core elements this movie had, a skillful writer could come up with a masterpiece of a monster movie, but all these elements were wasted here. Watching this movie it felt just like if someone had given an expensive car to drive to a toddler!!
So, the dumb moves they make are painful to watch, the characters are all highly annoying, obnoxious, unlikable and stupid. I didn't care one bit for them, and to be honest I wanted them to die. The sooner the better, except Johnny, he was likable, but also stupid. The way he died was ridiculous, for example, could have just flipped the motor so he could untangle from that ridiculous situation he gotten himself into. That whole situation should have never happened in a decent script. In the end, I have to say the whole movie was a torture to watch I couldn't wait for it to be over.
I don't do reviews usually, but as I said this was the dumbest horror movie I have ever seen script-wise, so I had to write my discontent down. It was so dumb and retarded, and it wasn't even fun or scary. It's not hard to realize that basically, all those kids died totally in vain. They could have prevented each and every death if they used their brain just a bit. But of course, the script didn't allow them to do so. For starters, Johnny could've warned the others and used his ax from the very start, so I was so pissed off that they found it later... It wasn't a pleasant surprise at all. Johnny all of a sudden had written DUMB all over his face. Also, they could've perfectly used one row to get the other row on both occasions, and I got to say the reactions of the the character when they fell into the water were incredibly retarded, most of the time they weren't even in a hurry to get to safety, like they were just chilling out there. It felt unreal, too much to stand. I don't know how I made it to the end but this was infuriating!
On so many occasions I was expecting Johnny to jump on the fish holding himself to that piece of wood stuck in it and fighting it like a madman to go out like a hero, but it didn't happen... instead he died later, like an idiot. His charachter didn't deserve to die like this.
My advice: Stay far away from this movie, believe the negative hype!
The Haunting (1999)
Ignore the critics, go see this underrated gem full of eye-candy!
I went to watch this movie at the cinema when it came out in 1999 and I was blown away. No matter what people say, this movie will always have a soft spot in my heart. Let me, first of all, say that I knew nothing about the movie or even that it was a remake. Little did it matter, because I enjoyed the movie so much it was very entertaining!
First of all, let me say it is pure eye-candy. Everything, the visual atmosphere was perfect, the location was top notch, visual effects were superb for the time, and still look good today, IMO. The story was mysterious intriguing and creepy, the acting was not that great, but quite ok. But above all, It opened my mind to the world of ghost movies, made me absolutely love them and search for them ever since.
I then later saw the original The Haunting from 1693 and I could understand, why the remake got so much hate, since it strays so much from the original black and white movie, which is in my eyes awesome, very well done and oh so haunting. The 1999 version is like it's completely different movie. It does share similarities but it does not feel anything much like the original. The original didn't show any entities, the remake showed a lot of them, making most people hate the fact because it lacked subtlety. And that is true, however, I like both movies a lot, it is just that I look at them under a different light.
While the original haunting from 1963, was a more serious, darker movie, its remake from 1999 is a more lighten-up version, we can safely say that it's made to appeal to a younger generation, especially with all that eye-candy treats and also some pretty cheap humor.
But to be honest I don't mind its flaws. Not many movies intrigued me to the level that The Haunting (1999) did when I first saw it. True that some CGI may look silly and might be overused, but I will be forever grateful to this movie and for me, it's a criminally underrated gem. It's mysterious, creepy and scary but also Beautiful, I don't know what we want more from a horror movie?
Its biggest mistake was indeed, to take the reputation of being the remake of such a classic gem. If it would've come out with a different, original name perhaps it would most likely get the respect I feel it deserves.
It's perhaps the movie that reminds me most of Phantasmagoria, an exceptionally creepy PC game from the '90s put on 7CDs, and an interactive movie, as they called it. On a side note; someone should make a movie adaptation of it as well :)
Also if you like the story from The Haunting, you should also check out "The Legend Of Hell House (1973) and The Uninvited (1944)"
Absentia (2011)
Intriguing to a degree but also pretty boring
I feel confused, usually, I have nothing against low budget movies and I've seen some outstanding ones, but this one failed to catch a level of greatness in my eyes. Partly also because of the hype that the reviews here created, I thought I was in for a hidden gem...
I liked the concept of the story, it was intriguing to a degree, yes, but the movie lacked in the execution and to me, it was pretty boring... the dialogues, the pace of events and even the music... They could've made indeed a much more entertaining movie out of it, that's for sure.
Gosuto shisutemu (2002)
Had GREAT potential, but due to lame execution,... However, it's still well worth watching for fans of the genre
I think that this movie is well worth watching, even if it's a Japanese ghost low budget B-movie.
It has a pretty interesting story, surprising twists, but it's quite short, and the camera isn't too good, neither the directing. But it's the concept of the plot itself that I find amusing, although the story should be much more in depth, especially about the machine system part, because it gives us no clue of how it works...The atmosphere is great, the facility looks creepy because it's abandoned and it's located in the middle of the woods.
Another thing that I didn't like was the introduction, it's way too long and unnecessary, as I said before, this movie it's quite short (01:13 with credits), so it could have done excellent without the introduction and by going more in-depth... It's a pity because if done better, it could have been a really great movie, speaking in terms of Ju-on, Ringu, Dark Water... The ghosts weren't that scary too, they seemed like perfectly normal people to me, or maybe a bit disturbed :) And the sound they emitted was rather annoying than scary but... Don't get me wrong, after all it's flaws this movie it's something special to watch for the fans of the genre, of course.
