Granite Harbour (2022)
Enjoyed the series
Not sure I watched the same series as the other reviewers but I found the storytelling, performances, cast and mystery-solving an enjoyable watch. No fluff, straightforward story that didn't waste my time stretching it to 5-6 episodes so I appreciated that. It sorta started off a bit comedic but once it settled in, the 2 main characters were likable and had good chemistry. Lindo's backstory is interesting and in further seasons I hope they explore that a bit. Someone said this show ticks all the right boxes, I don't really keep score that way, I watch for the storytelling, interesting ideas and characters, production value, a theme or message delivered without a heavy hand, and an emotional thread woven in that helps to elevate a mystery/crime drama.
I hope series 2 is on the way!
Let Them All Talk (2020)
Better than rating indicated,
Better than the indicated rating, it's definitely not for everyone, but if you like this kind of movie, you will enjoy it. Had to write a review because of the so-so rating and negative reviews. Didn't know what to expect other than the powerhouse casting of Meryl, Candace and Dianne. I did notice the dialogue was different while watching, then understood it after reading that the director and actors were improvising given the scene, context and desired end result. With that said, I thought it was a lovely movie. The only mark I thought was a miss is when Alice and Karen's "talk" was over music. I would have loved to listen how they reconciled and what they said - a young, ambitious career woman and a mature, experienced woman of a certain age. The ending left me happy, melancholy, but hopeful. As for the characters, the 3 main actresses brought their own wisdom, regrets, jealousy, love and fears to the role because they have lived it in a full personal and screen/stage life of their own. If you're looking for a quiet, thoughtful afternoon movie, give it a go.
The Thin Red Line (1998)
Poetic, beautifully filmed, and meaningful
Yup, if you're looking for simpler, single themed action film, this one isn't for you. But, looking for beautifully filmed thoughtful movie, both horrifying acts soldiers inflict upon each other against the nature that surrounds them, and with a multi-layered theme about man's nature, death, life, dark and light, then give an afternoon to this movie. I watched it and even after a couple of days I'm thinking about the soldiers, what it means to be a soldier, brotherhood as well as the vicious callousness with which they are dispensible. My favorite character is Pvt Witt, all the innocence he continues to hold in a jungle of death, makes me weep even today writing this review.
