BoJack Horseman (2014)
The depressed horse show
I know that there has already been too much talk about this series, I don't have much to say about all the topics it touches on, from depression or mental illness in a realistic way, being a black comedy that satirizes and criticizes several popular topics of entertainment in a very very accurate, etc
As I already said, I don't have anything new to add in terms of the good things that the program has, but, in terms of negative points, I have to say that the first and second seasons are quite tedious to watch, only being half redeemable by the brief high points of the season (for example in season 1 the episodes "The Telescope" and "Downer Ending")
because from then on, they are both somewhat bad (for me they are a 5 or 6), but in season 3 they take advantage of the positive points and reduce the negative points, making the program from season 4 onwards, went from decent to really good.
Weak 8: What seems to be an animated series for adults and a simple satire in its first seasons, turns into a fairly deep series as it progresses, touching on strong themes in a very realistic way.
Final Space: Chapter One (2018)
It's good as the first episode of the series, but it has the main problems that beloved adult series have
They say that Gary's character is very annoying, and yes, but not that much, I feel that his personality fits well with the style of the series and he combines well with other characters, but it is true that many times he feels very exaggerated, and in this episode especially is where it is most unbearable and there are many jokes that don't work because of Gary.
From then on, I think the episode is good, it is a good introduction to the series presenting the tone of the series from the first countdown scene.
The animation is quite good despite having very simple designs, it is super fluid and colorful
The plot of the episode is meh, everything that is presented here is not original or tries to make some significant change to what the science fiction genre is, especially in the characters (we have the protagonist who is good and somewhat idiotic, the adorable character who doesn't speak which is almost like the characteristic hallmark of this one, the secondary character who is tougher and who at first doesn't get along with the protagonist but we know that over time they will, the protagonist's love interest, the super antagonist bad, etc.)
Weak 6 - Mid 6: Good first episode that presents the premise of the series correctly, but it has many problems that you would expect when watching it for the first time (Forced/exaggerated humor and Simple plot)
Helluva Boss: Queen Bee (2023)
The cure for insomnia
Beyond the controversy over the representation of Beelzebub, I don't know why this episode was not as hated as E5S2, because for me this episode has more points to be considered the worst of the series.
Starting with Loona being the protagonist of the episode, we start off really badly
I'm just going to say that Loona only works for R34 and that in the series she seems more like a secondary character with a lot of screen time.
The only thing that contributes to the series is the whole issue with Vox that no one cares about and that is carried out in this episode
In this episode in particular I find Loona worse than normal because she is bipolar in this one (when Blitzø goes to pick her up and she decides to stay because lol)
Speaking of the rest of the episode, the animation is pretty good in the song I guess?, but this one is so repetitive and forgettable that I can't even put it as a positive point, the other characters don't do anything halfway interesting with them, they're just there
The only positive point I can find in this one is that at the end of the episode it seems that Loona is going to have a little character development by valuing Blitzø a little more, only for later episodes like E2S2 to forget them and the leave the same as before
From then on in general it is bad but maybe not that bad, I feel that more than making me angry this episode just bores me
I prefer to be made to feel at least angry than to feel the purest indifference.
Mid 3: Boring as hell episode that the only redeemable point it has no longer has any value for the rest of the series.
Season One Review:
And speaking of what season one was, I think that in general it is quite enjoyable but it has very big flaws that should be improved
I will not count the pilot as it is not canon and rest assured that if the previous episode had been the closing of the season the rating would have been much better (reaching at least something decent)
Mid 6: It seems to be a generic series for adults with good animation, but as it progresses you realize that it has certain things that make it stand out, although not enough to consider it above something enjoyable (Ok)
Helluva Boss: Ozzie's (2021)
So, this is where the series' decline begins?
At least in the Spanish-speaking community, this episode has the bad reputation that from here the series went into a tailspin and became a "Turkish soap opera."
And to think that this is the third best episode of the series
Like other of the best episodes of this one, it leaves the mold of the synopsis and uses elements already presented previously such as Blitzø's obsession with spying on Moxxie and Millie, we are also introduced to characters like Asmodeus and Fizzaroli (the real Fizzaroli).
If I had to highlight something about this episode it would be the animation, which in my opinion, this is the episode with the best animation, especially in the Asmodeus song with those bluish colors.
Speaking of the songs, they're okay, they're not as good as the ones in the previous episode but they're still pretty good (especially the Asmodeus song)
But speaking of the reason why this episode is so beloved is because of its ending, which is from there when all the drama begins with the relationship between Blitzø and Stolas, being that Stolas really loves Blitzø but he is involved with what He only wants it in a sexual way, only so that at the very end of the episode there is a scene where Blitzø is looking at some photos of himself on his cell phone, which when he gets to a photo of what is apparently his family and when he sees his mother starts to cry, thus ending the episode.
Leaving aside the final scene that would be explained little by little in the second season, I find the relationship between Blitzø and Stolas rather strange than something bad and that at first seems like it wouldn't work for a series of this style, at least in this episode, although I honestly prefer this Stolas to the one we had in the pilot who seemed like he was going to be just a character that would be used for pure sexual jokes.
Mid 8: Very good episode with a somewhat strange ending.
Helluva Boss: Truth Seekers (2021)
Simply the best episode of the series
Below, unlike my previous reviews, I am going to make a list of why I think this episode has everything a helluva boss episode should have and why I feel it is the peak of quality of the series:
- The episode gives a twist to what the series is about, being what would happen if the mission fails and they are captured, which although it is not a big change, it is not going away from the original plot of the series to deliver a decent episode of this
- The musical parts are great, Moxxie's part is good, showing that even though Blitzø is a bastard to Moxxie and seems to hate him, he really appreciates him and knows that Blitzø also appreciates him but he hides it ( demonstrating it at the end of this part), but Blitzø's part is on another level, here we are shown things that in previous episodes had been established such as his old relationships with Fizzaroli and Verosika, delving into the character with these, since Blitzø has distanced from people he loved and that is why he is now in a relationship with someone who he feels only matters to him sexually (Stolas), in the end this Blitzø opens up a little more with Moxxie and this seems to come out a little of his esteem towards
- It finally feels like all the main characters are contributing something to the episode that, although it may not be in an equal amount of screen time, it feels enough for each of the two plots that in the end they come together for the climax of the episode
- Speaking of the climax, it is the best action scene in the series and the best animated too, super gore and brutal
- And finally, I think it is the only episode where there is a semi-disturbing moment in the series, and I mean when Stolas appears, the atmosphere with the red lights turning off and on from the alarm, the appearance of Stolas when he manifests himself. When controlling the agent and when leaving her, details such as the pentagram made by the other agents with the blood of the dead agents and the camera angles, it is a moment that can make you crazy the first time you see it
Beyond the humor and the joke that Millie messed with Moxxie is repeated like 3 times, I feel that this is the limit of the series and that they will not be able to overcome it
Weak 9: Fantastic episode that knows everything a Helluva Boss episode has to have.
Helluva Boss: The Harvest Moon Festival (2021)
Much better than the previous two episodes
This episode for me has a little bit of everything, we see something different from what the series should be, exploring the characters a little in the process, we are introduced to an antagonist who, although not a big deal, imposes and is a good threat in the episode, and overall it's a good episode
I also feel that Striker and Octavia are the first antagonists that feel like a threat and that they weren't pushed aside like several other antagonists this season.
Even so, it has its flaws, such as the fact that it seems that the main character of the episode should be Millie and in the end Moxxie or even Blitzø contribute more to the episode than her (I feel like they should give her an episode because even Loona already has it )
Even with that, it's a very decent episode and one of the best of the season
Strong 7: Good episode that establishes things that are not going to be left aside.
Helluva Boss: C.H.E.R.U.B (2021)
This was one of my favorites
Unlike the second episode, this was one of my favorites along with the sixth, now I think it is one of the weakest episodes of the first season
Without being bad and I even think it is still enjoyable, just like all the episodes of this season (except for episode 8 and if you want to count the pilot), it feels like another setback with the previous episode.
There are several jokes that work but others that simply don't and they are some of the worst in the series.
The cherubs are the typical episodic characters that without having seen the rest of the series you know are not going to be important at least for a while, even leaving an open subplot at the end of the episode they have not appeared in all this time and I doubt they will do it
Weak 6: Among the standard episodes, this is the weakest.
Helluva Boss: Spring Broken (2021)
And we return to the usual programming
Don't get me wrong, I don't think this is a bad episode (in fact I think this is the most "helluva boss" episode of helluva boss), I just feel that compared to the previous episode this feels like going down a notch
I also feel that this is the episode that I "enjoy" watching the most and it has several positive things like I think it is the only episode with which I at least did a "heee.." with 2 jokes, loona does something and I think that's it XD
But maybe it doesn't have any objectively bad point (perhaps the fact that there are so many sexual jokes)
From then on, I think it's a standard episode.
Strong 6: It's an ok episode that doesn't do anything out of the ordinary but it's still quite enjoyable.
Helluva Boss: Loo Loo Land (2020)
I didn't like this chapter before.
The first time I saw this episode I didn't understand why for many it was their favorite and one of the best of the entire series.
Although I like this episode more now, I feel that it is not among the best of the series.
Something that I don't see anyone say is that in this episode they already start with the somewhat sentimental moments and that they try to delve deeper into the characters, which I think doesn't turn out completely well, but they still don't get to things that are already out of character originally as the following episodes.
Even so, this episode has many more good points, such as departing from the main plot of the series and giving a little prominence to non-main characters, going deeper into these (although as I said before it is a 50/50) and adding some things that they were going to be taken later as Fizzaroli
Mid 7: The first episode of the series that I can say is good.
Helluva Boss: Murder Family (2020)
Better than the pilot, but has almost the same flaws
As for the pilot, it has better animation, improvement in the structure of the episode, and a little in the humor (not that much)
Among some of the problems are that the episode is that it is too short and is quite rushed, the plot is what you would expect reading the synopsis of the series, and that's it
Maybe another problem would be Loona XD, but for now she is simply an almost filler character who has a lot of screen time, but at this moment i can't hate her as much as I do for the rest of the series
Maybe what makes it not stand out as much is that it is a very basic episode and it does nothing to make it stand out among the following episodes.
It is a standard episode of the series
Mid 6: Enjoyable but very average (Ok)
Helluva Boss: Pilot (2019)
I remembered it better
After watching the recently released Hazbin Hotel series (which I found entertaining and halfway decent) I decided to watch Helluva Boss again from the first to the last episode released and see at what point the series was "ruined" or if it is an exaggeration to call it a bad series
The pilot episode in summary presents everything that the series and its characters were supposed to be about.
The main problem with the episode is that it does not have a fixed plot, it jumps from scene to scene so that we can get to know the characters and it is mainly used for comic purposes, which knowing the type of humor that the Vivziepop series handles does not work very good.
In the end it does not stand out in anything other than the animation (and it is not as good as the following episodes) and perhaps a little in the potential that the idea could have.
Mid 5: It is your typical animation for adults with fairly basic black humor.
