Freddy vs. Jason (2003)
Well Worth the Wait!
Freddy Vs. Jason was awesome! The writer actually goes back and knows the material he's working with. I thought the movie was very respectful of both Freddy and Jason's mythologies, and added to them in a way that wasn't insulted to hardcore fans.
Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde (2003)
too much effort, not enough laugh
I love the first Legally Blonde. I made the mistake of watching it at home before I saw the sequel. The first movie is good for its lightness. There's nothing heavy there, it's just good fluffy fun. I was excited about the sequel because not only were the first characters coming back, but it introduced Sally Field and Regina King into the Elle Woods universe.
The people responsible for the sequel tried entirely too hard to recapture the light hearted feel of the first movie, and in the process only weighed it down. I spent too much time in the movie being bored, and wondering how they could do such a bad job at making a sequel. Once the movie had to start relying on bad gay jokes and stereotypes I knew there was no hope for it.
Final Destination 2 (2003)
Better then the first? Hardly!
Were you people even watching the same movie?
The original was way creepy. The forshadowing to the deaths was much more effective. Yes, the death scenes in the second one were pretty gruesome, but that doesn't make it better.
Actually, I didn't mind it that much. It was pretty bad though. I thought the idea that everyone from the 2nd was somehow tied to the deaths of the first was lame. They really didn't need to make those connections to make a sequel. They could have simply made all the people in the second have some kind of brush with death without it being connected. It's called a concept sequel, but, like Blair Witch 2, it's obvious people don't understand concept sequels that well.
I don't like how the second one was such a comedy of errors, as a friend pointed out in the theatre. Everything in the second one seemed just thrown together instead of being well calculated like the first.
As I said, I enjoyed the second one for it's crap factor, as opposed to the first which I enjoyed because it was actually good. The second film just lacked the polish the first one had.
Dancing at the Blue Iguana (2000)
Quite A Nice Surprise
I bought this movie simple for it's anticipated camp value. I was looking for another "Showgirls" or "Striptease" and in that respect I was sorely disappointed.
This movie works. It doesn't seem trite to me, and it's very real. The casting seemed really odd to me at first as well. Jennifer Tilly was the only one I thought would really "fit" in the film, and by the end I found her performance to be not as good as the others.
Sandra Oh, who plays Jasmine is absolutely brilliant, and I think hers was the saddest story of them all. Having only seen her as the principal The Princess Diaries I was quite shocked, but she did so well.
I was expecting mindless crap, and this movie really surprised me. It's heartbreaking and very realistic. I enjoyed it immensely.
Swimfan (2002)
Great Friday Night Fun!
Here's the way to enjoy Swimfan. Don't take it seriously. Yes, the entire movie was told in the 2 minute trailer, but it's fun. It's one of those wonderful meaningless movies that you go to on a Friday night to be surrounded by junior high kids who just got dropped off by mom and dad at the theatre door.
The acting isn't great, the plot is nothing new. But, it's a really fun movie It was worth the 7.75 simply for the entertainment value.
Feardotcom (2002)
FearDotCRAP!
Contains Spoilers I admit, I wanted to see this movie. I expected it to be decent, as it was from the same people who made House On Haunted Hill. What I didn't expect was for it to be so bad.
1. What was up with the lighting? Did they spend the entire budget on the website graphics and not have enough left over for electricity?
2. How many times can one movie reuse special effects from House On Haunted Hill? The "ghosts" walking around and having a seizure? The "ghost" at the end looked so much like the "shadow" from HOHH that I was waiting for Famke Janssen to pop out of it looking for Geoffrey Rush. The even ripped off the gory statues that could be found in the foyer to the basement in HOHH.
3. How did the main characters fall in love after meeting for two seconds? They had very little chemistry together. Which is probably due to the fact that Natascha McElhone CAN'T ACT!
4. The website issue and Denise the ghost woman were never really tied together that well either. AND, while we're on the subject of little Miss Ghost Denise, what mother would let her hemopheliac 8 year old walk 2 miles down the street to play in an old abandoned steel mill?
With a running time of 98 minutes that felt like 3 hours, by the end of feardotcom I had laughed so much that I really didn't care how it ended. I only wish that McElhone hadn't survived either, because the last part of the movie, the epilogue of her answering the phone and it being just static made no sense either.
Thank God they showed a preview for Ghost Ship!
Signs (2002)
Getting beat over the head with "Signs"
SPOILER ALERT If you haven't seen the movie, don't read my review SPOILER ALERT First of all, i think cameos are cool, but why did the director feel the need to have such a big part? For those of you who don't know he was the guy that hit Mel Gisbon's wife. And the scene where they were all eating pizza and going "is that him?" made it too obvious.
Overall the movie was good. It was supsenseful and fun, UNTIL the family went into basement to hide from the aliens. The first time a flashlight got dropped and everyone screamed was scary, then it got really annoying. Especially when it took forever for the director to show that everyone was still in one piece. Yeah, he was leaving it up to the imagination, but it got old quickly!
For me the movie pretty much went downhill from there. When everything wrapped up at the end it was just too calculated. The asthma, the water, the bat, "swing away" it was all too much. I went to see a movie about aliens, not get lectured about having faith and reading the "Signs" in the world around us.
I don't mind happy endings, but like I said this was way too calculated for my taste and ultimately ruined a movie that i thought had lots of potential.
Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002)
Blah
Yuck! I was really excited to see this movie and left the theatre disappointed. Thank God for Beyonce, Seth Green and Mindy Sterling. It started out good, with great cameos and just died. The whole thing was really hurried, like they just threw a bunch of ideas together and filmed it as fast as they could. I also felt that they were trying way too hard to replicate the feel of the first 2 films and failed miserably. A few good laughs, but I was really just ready for it to be over.
Stuart Little 2 (2002)
Such a Happy Movie
I was eagerly awaiting the release of Stuart Little 2. The first movie was so heart warming and fun that I was very happy to see that another would be released.
It was everything I wanted it to be. New characters, returning favorites and big adventures. The cast is as wonderful as ever. Nathan Lane steals the show as Snowbell.
The visuals are so appealing. The film makers do a very good job creating a world for Stuart and The Littles to live in. The soundtrack was also very good. I left the theatre with the same happy feeling I get after I watch the first one.
Eight Legged Freaks (2002)
great campy fun!
Eight Legged Freaks is a fun filed camp ride. It got some not so good reviews, but if you're looking for a fun movie that will keep you laughing this is it! I hate spiders. They scare me to death. Even seeing them on screen freaks me out, but I only had to cover my eyes once. Throughout the entire movie the spiders giggle and laugh. The characters are fun, and funny. The entire theatre was laughing along with me.
If you're looking for some sophisticated film this isn't it, but if you are looking for fun, here ya go. Seriously! I was waiting for this movie to come out because it was supposed to just be nothing more then an homage to the bug movies of the 50's, and it fulfilled it's goal. I was so entertained.
Not only that, but the CGI in the film was believable. It didn't just look like computer animation. The spiders were believable, which made all the difference in the world.
At the end I wanted the human characters to survive, but I also found myself cheering for the "Eight Legged Freaks.
Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)
it's just crap
If it weren't for the Halloween name on this film I never would have bothered to buy it. before I saw it I thought H20 was awful. This one made H20 an oscar winning film. yuck! it's okay that the characters were different but they could have at least tried to link the films together. i did like the end though.
