20 Years After (2008)
Very interesting, but not a good fit for impatient people
I saw this on Netflix, and despite its low rating both here and there, decided to give it a few minutes and see what happened. I'm glad I did. I think the reason for the low ratings is because this movie isn't built around what happens, it's built on atmosphere. But then it's a Southern movie, so if it were in a hurry, it wouldn't be authentic.
If you're the sort of person who needs everything to fit in a particular box, then this movie is not for you. But some will be able to appreciate this movie for what it is, a collection of somewhat connected scenes that are interesting in their own right, and which have an overall Southern Gothic feel that's freshly different from the ordinary. I came away from it feeling more like I'd had a dream than watched a movie, and while that's probably not what I'd choose every day, it was a worthwhile experience.
Star Quest: The Odyssey (2009)
Simply Dreadful
I have a fairly low entertainment threshold, and I rented this movie with pretty low expectations. But nothing could have prepared me for what a perfect storm of failure this movie is. The script is nonsensical, the CGI is choppier than one would expect even from a student project, the acting is robotic, the editing is incompetent, the sets and costuming are uninspired... there's simply nothing redeeming about this movie in any category.
I used to think that those creature-of-the-week movies that are on Syfy on Saturday nights were lame, but they're like Citizen Kane next to this flick. In fact, without exaggeration, I can say that "StarQuest: The Odyssey" is the worst movie that I have ever seen. Yes, EVER.
