Robyn Hood (2023)
Just bad.
I have only seen two episodes of this show, so please take what I am going to say with that caveat. Never have seen I show that was written so badly, I wonder if the people who made this show ever talk to other humans or if they modelled the human interactions after what they thought humans should act like. I have no idea how you produce a show this bad. It doesn't take much to figure out that the people who made this show only knew the Disney adaptation of Robin Hood based on how goofy everything in this show is. To give you one example: In one scene the police try to figure out in which apartment a criminal resides, so they send up a drone which gets shot down, so they leave angrily and leave the drone behind. They then go back to the station, to their chief, tell her what happened, and she kicks one of them in the chest for having lost a drone.
So in short: The camera work is average, the acting is below average, and the writing is abysmal.
The Witcher: Blood Origin (2022)
Terrible.
Not only does this show go against the actual history in the Witcher universe, it does so very boringly. The story of the Witchers has always been that they are tools created to hunt monsters. They only serve one purpose and one purpose alone, nothing else. Now that story is being turned upside down with bad writing and even worse storytelling. Nothing makes sense in the story and everything feels shoehorned in for no reason other than for Netflix to have to have another successful show. The show even mocks how generic it's story is in the very beginning. I don't want to spoil anything for the most die hard of fans who would likely suffer through this travesty, but overall I just can't recommend this to anybody. As an average Witcher-fan you will be upset how they could do this to this beloved franchise and the story is too weak to stand on it's own.
Example for bad writing:
There is a cabal of conspirators who wish to prevent the signing of a peace treaty between three kingdoms. So what do they do? They align themselves in a secret and send assassins out from all three armies to kill warriors who might support the signing of the peace treaty. Only to unite the three kingdoms once they have succeeded. Oh and the best part is, they heroes knew what they plan of the secret cabal was as soon as they saw the assassins.
I wish I was making this up. But no, somebody wrote this, somebody else must have read this and decided this should be made into a show. What a joke.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
Just bad writing
This show looks great but the writing is horrendous. The main character of this show decides to jump into the ocean, in the middle of the ocean, to swim across the ocean, based entirely on a whim. How did a room full of people even assume for a second that this makes sense? And this is just one blunder of many. I can't recommend this show for people who need a coherent storyline but people who only care about visuals might enjoy get some enjoyment out of this one. I am not a Tolkien fan and I have never read his writings but I doubt this series would have become as popular as it is if had taken such liberties.
Resident Evil (2022)
How do you make a show this bad on such good source material?
Apparently you do it by completely disregarding the source material and by doing whatever the hell you want. The writing on this is like someone took a CW teenager show and stuck zombies in it. Correction, it's not like that, it IS that. Gossip-girl with Zombies. Combine that with random songs being played over the show whenever the 'sound-producer' felt like it and you get whatever this is. I can only assume they made this show to retroactively make the works of Uwe Boll seem like masterpieces.
Terror on the Prairie (2022)
I didn't think they'd still make movies like this
This is an interesting mix of a story you'd expect from a 60's western movie, paired with modern storytelling. The story itself shows the value of family while not falling into cliches. I can't believe that I am saying this, but this is a movie with actual characters and not archetypes. The story might seem formulaic at first (if you only watch the trailer) but I assure you, it's not. I can't recommend this movie enough.
What Is a Woman? (2022)
Fantastic
This is a really entertaining documentary, even if you don't care about the subject matter. The way the questions are asked and the commentary make it fun to watch.
Halo (2022)
Good effects, terrible writing
Overall the show has some good scenery and cgi, the acting is okay but not great. The writing however is terrible and not well thought out. I could give you a dozen examples, but what killed the show for me was when two feared aliens came to human planet to look for somebody insignificant and the guards/military were more concerned with chasing after a couple of kids to deal with the situation despite noticing them. It's things like this which kill the otherwise meticulously crafted immersion. You don't get these "wow!" moments that you get from the game at all with this show. And that makes the show boring.
Love and Monsters (2020)
Really enjoyable
You won't find anything here that you don't see in other movies of the genre, most of the movie is a remix of already established tropes. But it is a great remix thereof. The actor of the main character especially does a really great job to portray the sometimes absurd story in the most believable way possible. This movie is a lot of fun to watch and a perfect homage to the 1975 film 'A Boy and His Dog'.
The Dragon Prince (2018)
Like Avatar but stupid
This was touted as the new show from the makers of the 2003 TV-show Avatar. But you shouldn't expect this show to be anything like avatar. This Show fails at two out of three things that made 2003 Original great. The world building is poor and the whole plot hasn't been thought out particularly well either. There are many contradictions within the first four episodes which is disappointing. The only thing that they managed to pull off, is to create similar humor. Avatar was interesting because it contained different cultures that had been inspired by real cultures and you would see them interact within appropriate historical and cultural contexts. In this show you have everything mashed together and nothing makes sense. I am really disappointed with this show and can't recommend it one bit.
Cobra Kai (2018)
One of the best new shows
This show manages to be fresh and retro at the same time. It's retro in the sense that the story is a continuation of the events that happened 30 years ago, but it's fresh in the sense that it has humor which you won't find anywhere else. I also like how this show replaces your current archetypes with more dated ones but then parodies them. You really have to see it, to understand it. It's quite evident that this show didn't have a huge budget but don't let that put you off. I bought youtube red so I wouldn't have to see ads without feeling bad for free loading, this is the first and only of their original content that I actually enjoy. I hope they make more of it.
The Lost Samaritan (2008)
This movie is different but good
This flick tells the Story of a clerk by the name of William Archer, who works hard at his job as an accountant and gets very little in return. Although this movie is about this person, who has the most unusual day of his life, the most interesting characters are the two killers that are after him. Both of them are portrayed in a very unique and humane way. The usual movie killer is portrayed as very cold and perfectionist but not these two guys, but they are also no idiots. It find it very difficult to describe them without spoiling the story for you. I can only recommend that you watch this flick and make your own opinion.
Mutant Chronicles (2008)
Different but not as bad as everyone says
This movie starts off really good, you have a futuristic WW1 style battle between the British and Germans. Which breaks a seal that releases mutants as a third party into the battlefield. From here on the Quality of the story gradually decreases. The acting is mediocre with two exceptions. Von Steiner really peaks out and Devon Aoki is doing okay too. The special effects look very cheap which is very unfortunate because the director heavily depends on them. The dialogs are very shallow too. But If you are into violent movies with a lot of action you might want to watch this flick but if an authentic/consistent story is important to you, you should avoid it.
