Dunki (2023)
A Good film with a hurriedly written ( changed?)screenplay
While watching the film, one gets the feeling the makers felt the movie will not stand upto PK Munnabhai series so the climax was hurriedly written. The weakest part of the screenplay was how fast the main protagonist in the film could reach England. Indian immigrants come mostly on the invitation of hotel owners, shop keepers, and simply stay on by going off radar. However let's give Raju Hirani benefit of the doubt. Taapse fits in seamlessly with Shahrukh. Raju Hirani missed the chance of developing Vicky Kaushals character and developing it into a great one. Nevertheless Vicky does a fantastic job. Sad to see Boman Irani a regular in Raju Hirani's film given next to nothing role for such a talented actor. Songs were too loud and Pritam is losing his touch. Dunki is doing well because of Shahrukh Khan but people are not talking about it. You can give the movie a miss and watch it on TV. But it's not bad watch either. It's just the film has suffered due to a week screenplay.
The Guide (1965)
The Guide- A movie which was well ahead of its time
I had seen The Guide way back in 1965 when it was released and I was just 8 years old. Subsequently I saw it 10 years back on YouTube. However I watched the re-mastered and restored version about a week back. The visuals, editing. Dialogue, music, songs were mesmerizing. Dev Anand as an actor was never better either before this movie or later. It was Vijay Anand's direction and screenplay was world-class and to be frank better than the novel which was written by R. K. Narayan who was not too pleased with either the English or the Hindi version. Kishore Sahu as the husband of Rosie Leela Chitnis as Raju's mother Jagirdar as the villager Anwar Hussain as Raju's friend all were excellent. Waheeda Rehman is splendid first as a frustrated wife who leans on Raju , The Guide for solace then as a lover then as a successful performer who condones Raju's crime but still loves him on knowing about the sacrifices made by him to give hopes to the villagers. So many emotions but always spot on with her expressions. Her snake dance to overcome her frustrations, her celebration of being free from her husband's clutches in Aaj phir jeene ki Tamanna hai to her lovely dance in Piya tose naina large re to Saiyaan Beimaan showing contempt for Dev's crime, all dances reflect great dignity expression beauty and class. Waheeda and Dev Anand light up the screen with their tremendous performances. The Guide is a timeless classic and will be remembered for a long long time.
