God's Own Country (2017)
More than memorable!
Some of us older folks would refer to Josh O'Connor as a bona fide Matinee Idol. A tremendous Thank You to Gemma Jones and Ian Hart for helping Josh and Alec to make this film what it is. Francis Lee has given us a drug free film and happy ending which in itself is a gift! .Who would argue the landscape is gorgeous and although the living conditions may be harsh the beauty of the souls comes through authentically. The South of England enjoys a spring a little earlier than the North which is what we experience in Southern New England, but have no fear the Jonquils will appear. Most actors you want to admire from a distance. With this cast of actors it would be an honor to sit and read a script together.
Out in the Dark (2012)
The minor flaw:
With multiple cultures and languages, you have to watch a movie many times to absorb the Director's meaning. The LGBT cult will tell you there's no other way the script could have been written. In truth, this could have been a back story of Amal Clooney growing up in the West Bank and having a good enough mind to study International Law in Tel Aviv. The story line could have been about Abir, Nimer's sister falling in love with Roy the Israeli lawyer, instead of a has been celebrity. Given the bias of the older brother, Abil the entanglements of the siblings would have been the same. The movie itself only in the escape sequence has only one minor flaw, if you could call it. Superb acting for the full cast. There should be a sequel!
Firebird (2021)
Touches of Genius.
While there were touches of genius, this movie was obviously not meant to be a blockbuster for a general audience. Although we don't daily use the continental Portuguese the only way to get the gist of the dialogue was to use the subtitles. This was after trying different soundtracks. After all that effort to bring forth the story to the screen maybe the cast should have spoken Russian. Haven't the paperback yet, but thinking an Oryol/Georgian youth with a military haircut would have been a better choice for the starring role. Tom Prior and the entire cast get an A for their efforts in any event.
