The Crush (2010)
Don't play down children.
This is a short story about a boy named Ardal. He is eight years old and has a crush on his teacher, Ms. Purdy. Ardal's dream is marrying her, but she has already a fiancé named Pierce. Ardal thinks Pierce does not deserve her fiancé, so he challenges Pierce to a duel. I like this movie because Ardal is pure and very brave. I was surprised at his behavior from beginning to end. I think this movie wants to tell us that we should not play down children. In addition, the acting of all casts is great. Even though the boy who performed Ardal is very little, his performance is so natural that I became absorbed by the story. This movie is only about fifteen minutes, but you can be satisfied as if you were after watching a feature film. I think it is worth seeing this film. I recommend this film especially to people who have children.
Love at First Sight (2010)
What is true love?
This is a short film about an old man named Arthur. He has dementia and lives in a care home. One day, he sees a beautiful woman named Ruth and falls in love at first sight. He talks to her. After they spend a day together, Arthur asks her to marry him. Ruth says "I love you." However, in fact, it is not the first time they met. I think it is a beautiful story. This film shows what true love is. Arthur and Ruth are very romantic people. I was moved to see that they love each other no matter how much time goes by. Also, the narrative is well-paced and well-formed. The last scene of this film is similar to the first scene. It shows us that Arthur's love at first sight will repeat again and again. I think it is worth seeing this film. When you would like to see a romantic movie, I recommend you watch this film.
Two Strangers Who Meet Five Times (2017)
beautiful and moving story
This is a short film about two men, Alistair and Samir. They meet each other in five different situations in their lives. The story begins from the second time. At the second time, Samir tries to get money from a cashpoint, and Alistair waits in line. Alistair is a racist, and then they quarrel there. However, as time goes by, the relationship between Alistair and Samir changes dramatically. I think this movie is really ingenious. I like the structure of the story. By changing the order of five scenes where they meet, the movie can control audience's emotion and feeling well. Also, the acting of the two main actors is great. I love their delicate expressions. Their acting can tell us subtle feelings of characters, so I was moved. Some scenes include some ambiguity, but it makes the story deeper. When you would like to become moved, I recommend you watch this film.
The Lunch Date (1989)
Funny, but includng some descriptions of discrimination
This is a short movie about a white woman who misses the train. She buys a salad at the cafeteria while she waits for the next train. However, when she takes a fork and returns to her seat, a black man eats her salad. Then she reluctantly shares it with him. This film includes some descriptions of racial discrimination between white and black people and shows the social gap between the rich and the poor. For example, a black man in the film is depicted as homeless and asks people to give him money whereas the main character, a white woman, wears luxurious clothes. This movie was created in 1989 and shows us some social issues at that time. I think it is a great movie because it has fun as a comedy, but it also tells us the seriousness of social problems at the same time. The narrative is well-paced and well-formed, and I was surprised at the ending. I did not expect it and enjoyed it. I strongly recommend you watch this great short film.
Three Days in Kamakura (2012)
a boy changes the relationship of a married couple
This movie is a short story about a married couple, David and Keiko. They seem not to be getting along well, and they are suffering from not having a child. One day, David takes a young boy called Jay to his home because Jay is left by his mother. Jay is one of the students at the English school where David works. They spend a day together. I think that the important factor of this movie is the change of the relationship. Jay brings a lot of influence to David and Keiko. Even though this film avoids straightforward expressions, I can find that their mind and relationship will be changed gradually. Also, the acting of all the cast is great. Their performance is so natural that I became absorbed by the story. I think it is worth seeing this film. I recommend that you pay attention to small changes in the characters' expressions.
Otousan no tabako (2007)
the girls consideration for her father
This movie is a short film about a girl who is an elementary school student. Her father suffers serious illness, but he cannot stop smoking. Even though people around him tell not to, he asks his daughter to buy a cigarette many times. She is going on an adventure alone for a cigarette. The main character looks like a caring and brave person. She keeps walking for a long time to buy a cigarette and is willing to talk with strangers. I am impressed to see her consideration for her father because she is only seven years old. The narrative is well-paced and well-formed, but I am not sure what this movie wants to tell the audience. I think there are many ways to interpret the theme of it. I suppose this is a great short. It is worth seeing this film, and you will be able to enjoy its ingenious story.
J'attendrai le suivant... (2002)
searching for true love...
"I'll Wait for the Next One" is a French short film about a woman who searches for true love. She meets a stranger in the subway in Paris. On the train, the man suddenly introduces himself and says that he is looking for a lady who can share true love with him. He asks passengers to get off at the next station if they are interested in him. The main character looks lonely and hankers after love. I feel sympathy for her and it is sad to imagine her feeling at the end of the movie because it has a grievous punch line. The narrative is well-paced and well formed. The main character does not speak at all in the film, but the facial expressions and background music tell us the characters' emotions, so it is easy to understand the movie. I think this is a great short, but I do not recommend this film to people who lead a lonely life because you may become sad.
Lifted (2006)
an adorable ailen
"Lifted" is a comedy about a young alien who is taking a human abduction test in a spacecraft. He tries to abduct a sleeping human under a critical instructor's watchful eye, but he doesn't know which switch to use, and it's not going well. The main character has a good motive and does trial and error as the human keeps sleeping. His action is plausible and adorable, and I sympathize with him when he feels nervous and cries in front of the instructor. I want to cheer him to success when I see his hard work. The narrative is well-paced and well-formed, and it has a funny punch line. Just like "Knick Knack," which is one of Pixar's other short movies, there is no dialog, but I can understand the characters' emotions because of their facial expressions. This is a great short that includes a lot of humor in only five minutes. It is worth seeing this film. I am sure that you can laugh a lot.
Fish Out of Water (2005)
a man who tries to make his commute comfortable
"Fish Out of Water" is a comedy about a man who commutes to work by rowing boat in order to avoid the morning traffic jams. However, when a beautiful blonde woman asks to join him, his comfortable boat riding is obstructed gradually. The main character is a creative person and comes up with a great idea to make his commute comfortable. His idea is surprising, and I like his creativity and flexibility. The narrative is well-paced and well-formed, and it has a funny and unexpected punch line. No one speaks at all in the film, but facial expressions and background music tell us the characters' emotions, so it is easy to understand the movie. This is a great short that includes a lot of humor in only 8 minutes, so it is worth seeing this film. If you watch this film, you will chuckle. I am sure that you can enjoy it.
Knick Knack (1989)
A funny and adorable snowman
"Knick Knack" is a comedy about a snowman who wants to join other toys' summer party. He tries to get out of the snow globe, but the glass dome prevents him from doing so. Thus, he attempts to break it in various ways. The main character has a good motive and does trial and error. His action is plausible and adorable, and it is heart-warming to see his hard work. The narrative is well-paced and well-formed, and it has a funny punch line. It reminds me of Toy Story because in both of these films, toys are given lives and moves like a human, although the characters in Knick Knack do not speak any words. This is a great short that includes a lot of humor in only 4 minutes, so it is worth seeing this film. If you watch this film, you will become happy. I am sure that you can enjoy it.
