Spielzeugland (2007)
A miracle born of lies
This is a short film set during World War 2 in Germany with racial themes surrounding two boys. One of them is Heinrich and the other is David, and he is Jewish. They are friends, and they often play the piano together. Heinrich's mother hopes this situation continues, but realistically it can't be continued because David is Jewish. Heinrich is told that David will go to Toyland, and he wants to go there with David. In reality, only David, is taken, and Heinrich is unable to go with him. However, thanks to some quick thinking by Heinrich's mother, David can escape capture. This story is gripping, and both tragic and heartwarming. I was especially moved by Heinrich's mother's actions. Also, the characteristic of this film is that the timeline is depicted in a disjointed manner, rather than simply arranging events in a straightforward manner. There is no dialogue in the last scene, but I think it's a highlight, so please watch until the end.
Love at First Sight (2010)
Couple for life
This is a romance movie about a man and a woman who meet at a nursing home. When Arthur wakes up in the morning and is about to eat breakfast, he finds a woman he has never seen before. Her name is Ruth. Arthur falls in love with Ruth, talks to her, and spends the day with her. At the end, he proposes marriage. The next day, the same thing happens again, and he falls in love with Ruth again. In fact, Arthur suffers from dementia and loses his memory after a day. The story is gripping, but if you don't understand he has dementia, the question arises, "Why did the same scene repeat itself?" Also, there are some difficult parts to understand because there are some scenes where characters dare not say something, for example, the scene where Ruth is reminiscing with her photo album. However, these methods will impress some
viewers.
Two Strangers Who Meet Five Times (2017)
Changes in relationships
"Two Strangers Who Meet Five Times" is a drama that depicts the development of the relationship between two characters. One day, the two meet on the street, but this is not actually their first encounter. They end up meeting five times in total. During their first and second encounter, Samir, who is of Middle Eastern descent, is insulted. However, in the third and fourth meetings, the positions are reversed and Alistair, a white Englishman, is in a lower position. The story is gripping, and it makes us think about how the two people's positions and situations have changed drastically over time. The development of the story is interesting, but there are some dark parts as one of the themes is racial discrimination. In the final scene, Samir doesn't speak a single word, but by refusing to let him speak, I think this has the effect of making the ending of the story even better. I recommend watching this short film.
The Lunch Date (1989)
It's interesting movie.
"The Lunch Date" is a short film about a white lady and black men that revolves around discrimination against black people. The lady bumps into a black man and she misses the train that she wanted to take. While she is waiting for the next train, she enters the café and order a salad. When she goes to get the fork and then goes back to her seat, there is a
black man who is eating her salad. She is angry but she reluctantly eats her salad with him. After leaving the café, she realizes that she left her bags there. When she goes back there, she notices something strange. The main character has rich expression, and it is easy to convey their emotions such as sadness, anger, and laughter to the audience. This story is not only interesting, but also has dark parts that suggest discrimination against black people, and this may be one of the themes. I can't say it's necessarily a good story, but I recommend watching it.
Three Days in Kamakura (2012)
Changes in marital relationship
"Three Days in Kamakura" is a drama that revolves around the marital relationship between David, a British man, and Keiko, a Japanese woman. David teaches English classes for kids and seems to like children. Their marriage is not very good, and they have no children. Keiko's stomach is scarred after surgery, and she probably won't be able to bear a child. One day, there is a child at David's school whose mother hasn't come to pick him up. David proposes to Keiko that they keep the child, but she is against it. Their conflicts greatly drive the story. This story is gripping, and thought-provoking. The two main characters have good facial expressions, and it's easy to understand their emotions even in scenes where they don't speak. Also, there are several hints that are key to the story, such as the scar on her stomach and the radio broadcasting the news of the Kamakura train accident, which I think is effective. I recommend paying attention to how their relationship as a couple changes.
Otousan no tabako (2007)
Family love
"Otousan no tabako" is a drama movie about an elementary school girl and the adults around her. On her way home from school, the girl goes to a vending machine without telling her friends or her mother. It is the vending machine that sells cigarettes. The story is very gripping, and makes you ask questions such as, "Why is she going to buy cigarettes?" and "Whose cigarettes are they?" The main character seems to have a pure and kind personality, and I feel warmth in her acting. While this story has some dark and sad parts, it also has some heart-warming parts, like the one at the end where the family of three are reading a picture book about a big turnip. As the story progresses, the elementary school girl meets high school girls, office ladies, and thugs, and I think it's interesting to watch the story while thinking about what kind of keys these characters hold. This is a great short film worth watching.
J'attendrai le suivant... (2002)
Surprising ending
"I'll wait for the next one." is a dark comedy about a woman and a man who ride the same train. The woman is about to go home by train as usual after finishing work. The man happens to be on the train, and he starts talking on the train in search of love, and then the story unfolds from there. The story is gripping, and at the beginning it makes me wonder, "What kind of person is this woman?" I imagine that the main character is single, has a somewhat gloomy expression, and seems not to be satisfied with her life. While there are comedic elements to the character's action, there are also some dark aspects. Although the woman doesn't speak at all, I can clearly understand her emotions just by looking at her facial
expressions, such as her melancholy and envious expressions. At the end, the story unfolds in such a way that I can't help but say "Wow!" in surprise, and please pay attention to her facial expressions.
Lifted (2006)
A comedy short animation
"Lifted" is a quiet comedy about the abduction of a sleeping human being by aliens. The young alien is still an apprentice, and the examiner is testing him. The story is exciting and leaves me wondering what is going on from the beginning. The main character doesn't seem to be very smart and always makes mistakes. Also, his actions make me nervous. Although the examiner looks scary at first glance, he actually has a kind personality, willing to let his apprentice take the wheel again even if he fails. The use of sudden light and sudden loud sounds is impressive and makes me even more fidgety. Also, the characters' facial expressions are so funny that I can't help but laugh even when they're not saying anything. This is a good film packed with fun, surprises, and excitement in just five minutes, and I think it's worth watching. You won't want to miss the end scene.
Fish Out of Water (2005)
My review of "Fish out of Water"
"Fish out of Water" is both a drama and a comedy about a male office worker's commute to work. He commutes alone every morning on his boat to avoid the morning traffic jams, which is a peaceful time for him. One day, a woman saw him commuting and asked to be taken on his boat. Then his boat commute takes an unexpected turn. This story is gripping and makes us empathize. The main character seems sincere, and his good acting makes us chuckle. His actions and personality have a different humor than others, as he chooses a boat instead of trains, buses, or bicycles to commute to work. Also, the background music that evokes a sense of calm is impressive and matches his actions. This is a great
film that depicts everyday life but also has comedy in it. All generations can enjoy this film and it is worth seeing.
Knick Knack (1989)
One of Pixar's interesting story
''Knick Knack''
This movie is both a comedy and a bit of tragedy, about a snowman trying to escape from his snow globe. He struggles to escape to reach the woman
outside the snow globe. This story is so funny that everyone who watches this film will chuckle unintentionally. Also, it is such that anyone can
empathize with his feelings of wanting to escape from the situation he is in. The main character is clever in coming up with various ways to escape and trying them out, but he's also goofy, such as when he uses a bomb to break the glass of a snow globe, which causes an explosion inside the globe and sends him spinning inside. This is a wonderful film that is both funny and tragic in just 4 minutes, and develops into an unexpected twist. Although there is no dialogue among the characters, the snowman's facial expressions tell us everything, making it a work that can be enjoyed by people of all ages.
