The West Wing (1999)
TV doesn't get much better than this
This show is unbelievably well crafted. Interesting, up-to-date topics discussed showing how idealism has to meet reality. The dialog is fast and witty, and as a non-American, you can't always understand exactly the political intrigues - which makes the program even more interesting, as you feel the writers take you seriously. What is even better, you can seldom predict the endings because the moral isn't always in traditional fairy-tale style. The cast is brilliant, especially... no every one of them!
Pay It Forward (2000)
Beautiful about utopia versus reality
There's something about this movie, that make you feel good. It's not because it ends happily - it doesn't - and it's not because it describes the world as filled of happy people that does each other good all day - it doesn't do that either. I guess it's because it's about people that makes an effort. Makes an effort to understand other people, and makes an effort to do something good beyond our everyday life.
Minority Report (2002)
P.K. Dick + high tech effects + Spielberg = WOW!
Pretentiousness put aside, you got to hand it to them: this movie has a interesting idea for a plot, contains great effects, has some of the Spielberg warmth and humor, and it has a skilful cast that isn't necessarily composed by the Hollywood usuals.
By the way, cheers to Samantha Morton for her performance as the precog Agatha. She's scary, cute, alien-like and sensual at the same time, without even having hair. How about that! :-)
A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)
Hey! Switch channel to Letterman!
Hey, Mr Spielberg, you can't expect us to fall for your dirty tricks any more. Ok, I like E.T., but that doesn't mean I'm going to put up with this nonsense story, interlarded with too much computer graphics and smarmy sentimentality. I mean, the whole thing keeps getting more and more weird until you think: who is this guy, who thinks he can create a gripping fairy tale out of thin air! The kid is okay, though.
Monopol (1996)
Political ambitions more important than comedy?
Claes Eriksson's political messages has become more and more explicit in his later work with for example "Lyckad nedfrysning av herr Moro" and this movie. There are still highlights in the movie that keep you laughing for hours and will talked about with friends for years - the parody of the Swedish dance-music, for example - but the intelligent comedy leaving no room for yawns that used to be Eriksson's trademark seems to have taken a vacation. Sometimes, it seems as if the political messages - that are easy to sympathize with - are more important than the humor.
Don't get me wrong. This work is the most technically advanced movie they ever made, and it was probably the funniest Swedish movie at the time. But still - maybe Eriksson should focus on the comedy and hint some political messages instead of focusing on the politics and sneak in some comedy...?
Under Suspicion (2000)
Hack!
The movie keeps you waiting for a twist at the end, but when it occurs, it leaves many questions unresolved. Hackman's and Freeman's able acting is not enough to keep up the viewers' interest as the story loses momentum, and the anti-climatical ending... boy, that's one anti-climatical ending.
