Ripley (2024)
Hitchcock meets Fellini
This show is fantastic. Not quite sure if I've ever seen anything like it before, certainly not on Netflix!
If Alfred Hitchcock and Fellini got together to make a TV show for Netflix, this would be it.
At the risk of sounding like a pretentious film critic, the cinematography is amazing. The use of black and white photography along with the wonderful editing, and beautiful Italian settings, adds To the whole "film Noir" vibe about the whole thing. Making it both atmospheric and moody.
It can perhaps be seen as a bit of a slow burn at first, certainly for the first two episodes, but even then there is something hypnotic about it that keeps you watching.
A fantastic watch, but I cannot recommend highly enough.
Pignorant (2024)
Fantastic eye-opening documentary
This is vegan activist Joey Carbstrong's first documentary, and I hope not his last.
It shows the bravery of him and his colleague as they set up hidden cameras to show the horror of a gas chamber in a pig slaughter house.
Many people don't associate the food on their plate, with the real suffering of the animal that they are eating, so it's important for them to know the truth.
Upsetting as the footage in the documentary is, it isn't too graphic as far as blood is concerned, so I would recommend it to anybody, whether they are vegan already, thinking of going vegan, or even a staunch carnivore.
If you are thinking of giving it a watch, then please do. The high ratings on here should surely tell you something.
Squid Game: The Challenge (2023)
THIS IS A GAMESHOW - THIS IS NOT SEASON 2 OF THE KOREAN SQUID GAME SERIES - THIS IS EXCELLENT
Let me start by reiterating what has been reiterated by so many people rating this program... THIS IS A GAMESHOW - THIS IS NOT SEASON 2 OF THE KOREAN SQUID GAME SERIES!
It is a fantastic concept, and all of the games in it are based around the games in the original series. All of the sets where the games take place are virtually identical to the ones in the original series. However, for those of you that appear to not understand the concept... THIS IS A GAMESHOW - THIS IS NOT SEASON 2 OF THE KOREAN SQUID GAME SERIES!
Fans of the original series, you may have noticed that the losing contestants in every round die in circumstances, so if you are looking for this to happen, you are going to be very disappointed, as I have pointed out before... THIS IS A GAMESHOW - THIS IS NOT SEASON 2 OF THE KOREAN SQUID GAME SERIES!
All of the fan favourite games from the original series are featured, such as 'Red light Green light', 'Marbles', 'Tug-of-war', as well as new ones such as 'Battleships' and some brutal elimination rounds. Like I said before however, people DO NOT DIE in this. Instead they get shot with a paint gun in the chest and fall to the ground. I know that this may disappoint so many people, however actually killing people would be a step too far, even for Netflix. Why? Because... THIS IS A GAMESHOW - THIS IS NOT SEASON 2 OF THE KOREAN SQUID GAME SERIES!
A lot of people have mentioned on here that it is very Americanised... Well Duh, there are American people in it but there are English people in it, and there were Scottish people in it, and there Irish people in it, and there is an Australian guy in it, there are Chinese people in it, in fact there are people from all over the world.! And as for being completely Americanised, one of the production companies was ITV studios, a British company.
So for all of you that haven't watched it yet, give it a go and you might be pleasantly surprised. Ignore all the negative reviews on here, which were obviously written by people who were expecting either season two of the original, or some form of bloodthirsty Battle Royale Show.
Oh by the way did I mention... THIS IS A GAMESHOW - THIS IS NOT SEASON 2 OF THE KOREAN SQUID GAME SERIES?
Alan Partridge Live: Stratagem (2022)
Cringing Bad
I would not class myself as a particular Alan Partridge fan, but I thought that I would give this a go.
For the first 10 minutes it seemed to have promise, but like a ski slope of cringe, it rapidly descended.
I was actually feeling for the live audience, and how they must have felt with the tumbleweed rolling over them.
The uncomfortable silences from them came thick and fast, unlike the laughs, which were noticeably absent.
The only difference between myself and them, being the fact that I did not have to pay £30 for the displeasure.
If you are a hardened Alan Partridge fan, then possibly this might be for you, but if you are looking for some intelligent comedy, this probably should be avoided at all costs.
It is such a shame, because I know that Steve Coogan is capable of much better.
Beast of Burden (2018)
That's 40 minutes of my life that I will never get back.
I really should learn to look at the IMDb ratings before I watch a film.
I very rarely watch anything below 5, and after 40 minutes of this dross I checked the rating to see that it was a 3. No surprise whatsoever. To be honest in my opinion it was lucky to get a 3. At that point I turned off.
I honestly thought that if it starred Daniel Radcliffe it wouldn't be too bad, how wrong I was. Whatever possessed him to take on this role after reading the Script is a complete mystery.
Tedious tedious tedious. Really don't bother.
