The Prize (1963)

A quagmire. Very difficult to believe.

I know that Paul Newman was a great actor. His body of work includes some very highly regarded films. In this film, he really portrays a person who could not be real. It is demeaning to see him perform such poorly written, produced and directed work. The story is choppy. The circumstances just too comedic. The film's texture is very nice because of where it was done. But the premise and the story are so awful. Edward G. Robinson, Elke Sommer just to name 2 of a cast full of beautiful women. They brighten up the scenery. I don't want to say more because if you are a fan of comedy/drama you might love it. Have patience if you decide to watch it.

Bogie really did this?
16 January 2008
The main reason for my enjoying this flick is the ending. I was feeling a bit emotional today and was happy with the outcome of the film. I actually sat through all those songs that were performed throughout the film (and I detest most musical stuff). I think the best facet of this film was Louise Fazenda. She just tickled me with the way she presented herself and she was big in Mack Sennet films of yore. She just did everything asked of her without any problems. Bogie seemed totally our of school here, being pushed around physically and really over acting some of his situations. One the whole, for 1938, it could see why some people would see this to escape their every day drudge. I just finished reading a bio of Bogart and felt that he was just thrown in because Warner Bros. could do so. He showed up, did his shtick and went home.

Saboteur (1942)

Lovely, just lovely.

Scrumptous Hitch doing his thing patriotically for our benefit. How could any Hitchcock fan not love this tale? Bob Cummings is a real believable All-American type. Priscilla Lane, one of the beautiful Lane Sisters couldn't be more perfect. The rest of the cast is also excellent for all assigned roles. This film makes you wonder what has happened to America. As it was in the World War II era, the villains were never a match for our way of thinking. Nowadays, we have a much heavier political influence on everything. Then, it was pretty much cut and dried that we were going to eliminate the enemy. Alfred Hitchcock had a way of engineering the characters on film to make you really get inside of the story. This flick is beautifully done and well worth the time spent watching. I love the texture, the time and the story line. I love this film.

Good old style gangster stuff.

I love this genre of film because it shows many facets of life during the time in which it is depicted. The clothing, the style of filming and the cars, my absolute favorite. I have a real thing for jailbreak flicks and this one didn't let me down. How could it with James Cagney at the helm of the gang? The cast of the movie is excellent. Everyone is suited to the part they played because they were believable. I just felt comfortable with the entire production as it included all the dimensions of crime films that are needed to make it successful. Whether it was a box-office smash when it released doesn't matter today. If you enjoy a snarling, conniving crazed character played by the red-headed genius of James Cagney, you'll enjoy watching this film. P.S. Does anyone know what kind of exotic car is used in this film?
