Hit So Hard (2011)
Behind every powerful woman is an inspirational woman!!
Stirring rock documentary with themes of survival, redemption, and good old woman-power. What small-town girl doesn't have dreams of being in a rock band? But Patty Schemel actually went out and did it, on her own terms and without miniskirts and push-up bras.
The treasure trove of archival footage was fascinating on its own, but was well put to use in service of Schemel's story. I laughed out loud at her "typical drummer" goof-ball pranks, and some comical interview footage of her Hole band mates, but also teared up at several points during her descent and eventual triumph.
Ms. Schemel is not simply a female drummer who can keep a beat like the guys; her big heart beats throughout the documentary. I can't wait to see it again. She's a hero.
The New Women (2001)
Northern Virginia. southern dope
Hello, out there in god-forsaken hick-ville - the dialog is intentionally stilted in that stylized old Hollywood way. The film is called The New Women - perhaps you have never seen a little picture titled The Women? I am certain that film is somewhere here on the IMDb, you should look it up. Do you reckon people really talk the way the characters do in that film? Or any of those films from the Golden Age of Hollywood, for that matter? Do real women really speak like Mildred Pierce? Do real men really speak like Welles's Kane? It's not about naturalism. The realism you seem to desire came with the 1950s, and was a reaction against the Old Hollywood style of dialog. This movie makes no attempt at realism, I mean, honestly! Unless you've been ingesting some fine Virginia-grown 'shrooms, I am going to assume you are simply a bit, um, slow.
Deep Six (1986)
80s flashback - "performance art", a coke deal gone awry.
This film was so of its moment; where people are only now catching on to spoofing the 80s, this hilarious short did it while the 80s were actually happening. A document of the period that was 15 years ahead of its time.
