Cowboy Bebop (2021)
A perfect chance thrown away
I'm a huge fan of the original anime and this remake looks more like a fresh out the school director attempt. Camera shots, lights, chroma keys and lines are poorly directed and executed. I noticed the effort in giving more details and lines to all the characters but most of the times it brakes the peace. I'm big fan of John Cho and he quite fits the suite of Spike but the performance is not quite there. I'd rather went for new stories instead of making simpler versions of the original ones.
Zombieland: Double Tap (2019)
I expected a bit more after so much time
The characters are there (finally, after the pale attempt to make a series), a bit older and not so more mature. The comedy is there, zombies are there... what's missing? The magic and the freshness and maybe the hype.
As a personal note: the Italian speaking guy is for sure not italian and not really speaking italian, just listing some vulgarities and, no way, the Tower of Pisa would be used to kill zombies.
Vengo anch'io (2018)
A new classic among Italian comedies
This film has finally brought a fresh touch to Italian comedies and deserve to be a classic.
One could say that trip (or on the road) plot and the funny mental disorders story have been around for a while but those are metaphors for life in the most accurate way: sometimes you have to loose everything and have a journey to find what you're really missing.
Sticking to the movie the story is touching and softly funny (with some vulgarity here and there but in a good way) with twists that are really a surprise and some notable cameos.
The only weak point is the soundtrack and music not really proper in every moment.
Watch this movie and give yourself a pleasant 90 minutes (unless you have something really better to do).
Zodiac (2007)
It's not necessary to watch this film. Save yourself 2 and a half hours.
I'm a big fan of David Fincher and the photography and atmosphere is above expectations. But...:
this film is so boring and so pointless that the audience is carried for 150 minutes only because they started watching and want to see how it ends. You're going to be disappointed.
More sophisticated people will tell you that this is a master piece with tension and atmosphere and crude but simple violence. Just because a film peace is sloooow doesn't mean it's a good film.
So many times you think you're close to solve the enigma and this sad plot works for those who doesn't know the (real) story of the Zodiac that is depicted in this film.
Trust me: spare you a lot of time and go on Wikipedia to read the Zodiac story which is complex and chilling without the need of a dramatization of a pointless 2 ad a half hours.
Tammy (2014)
Light, very light comedy with weak plot
I watched "Identity thief" and enjoyed Melissa acting and verve: she can really be funny and dramatic and drive a film with her emotions.
Then I decided to watch Tammy full of hope and I ended being disappointed.
To be fair, the beginning is quite brilliant, the story had potential and Melissa is doing her thing...but:
1. The story is so weak it seems to be written along the way.
2. The excellent cast is pointless, none has a good part.
3. The watcher is constantly waiting for a joke, a punch line, a fanny thing that never arrives.
4. Many comedies have a drama background, this one makes no exception but even the dramatic part is weak.
5.It's cute that the real life couple McCarthy - Falcone are making films together but this one sounds like and home made video - it only lacks the 8 or 16 mm film.
I use to watch so many films it's okay I watched this one too but I could have spent the time far much better, even taking a nap.
The Predator (2018)
A bit expected but a lot fun
As a big fan of Predator franchise I expected this one but had no expectations. The cliches are always around the corner (Predator is not even the biggest, you get attached to a character just to see him die), the CGI Predator is surprisingly bad (manual animations?) But the whole film is a good Predator film after all and I'm glad is part of the franchise.
The Purge (2018)
Satisfied the expectations
Perfectly in line with the spirit, the mood and the atmospheres of the films, the series, gives more suspance.
Good people, bad people, good turned bad and bad turned good, the philosophical questions are always behind the corner but the action is still present.
I found episode after episode, each one entertaining and never predictable and myself glued to the screen wanting for more.
Can't wait for the next season to come.
Gods of Egypt (2016)
A spectacular meatloaf on the trails of Percy Jackson and the Gods of Egypt.
Messing around with myths, from Greek ones to Egyptian ones, is a cult in movies since the old glorious days of Cinecittà and the beginnings of Hollywood. I can't count how many Odisseus and Troy films have been made to these days, Clash of the Titans and so on. Being faithful to a mythological story is sometimes tricky when you want to make a good movie without being ridiculous but, nowadays, audience is more used to fantasy movies and fantastic stories so producer, writers and directors can be more bold. Maybe that's the fault, maybe a story based on a mythology (which means old funny religion) is a good ground for a stunning, eye candy, nonsense movie. The many discrepancies and anachronisms are often too much to allow this film to be called Gods of Egypt. The gods hierarchy is messed, the earth is depicted as flat (really??) while we know perfectly that Egyptians were perfectly aware of the roundness of our planet. and (once again after Stargate) gods (RAH) looks more like aliens (not that crap again) than deities.
Worth a look but not the box of popcorn and, certainly, not the cost of the disc.
Emelie (2015)
Cliché in babysitting
Slow, too slow, not frightening, not scary, a bit of a thriller with no surprises. Sure the acting is good, the photography is good, technically, the film is well made but, honestly, the whole film could have lasted 30 minutes (with advs), have more suspense in it (I guess they tried to put some suspense but they failed). The pace is constant till the end making no climax at all. Don't bother to watch it, it's a C movie with a nice cover.
Zombie Night (2013)
A really good zombie film
The usual big productions zombie films are nowadays cliché: you immediately will know who'll survive and who'll die. Films like Zombie Night, instead, are unpredictable, they really give you the thrill of - is him/her going to make it?. Generally speaking, unless there's (much)humor in it, the quality of small budget zombie films is acceptable, other ways the film becomes a Z movie (generally zombie films are already B movies). This film is thrilling, creepy and moving; the cast is (really) good, the peace is very good, the photography is essentialand it's a good thing for a change. In addiction many zombie clichés are avoided giving the story more creditability. I really enjoyed the time watching this film and I highly recommend it.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)
Absolutely unfaithful to the books
Peter Jackson is for sure a great director but didn't red the Lord of the Rings and didn't red The Hobbit; neither did Boyens and Walsh. Maybe they thought The Hobbit was too boring the way it was. They depicted The Hobbit as a prequel of Lord of the Rings with the same atmosphere, fights and frightens though The Hobbit is a book for children. As they did before in The Lord of the Rings they cut too much to introduce concepts, stories and people never occurred in the books. The films should report "loosely based on the books by J.R.R. Tolkien". Everything that's funny has been removed except the clumsiness of Bilbo and a few words from Gandalf. The whole spirit of the original book has been taken away.
