The Manitou (1978)
so bad it's good
That's a reverse scale to mean that it is so awful that it is actually fantastic. So my score of 1 means it is super entertaining. Get this: Tony Curtis's girlfriend finds a little lump on her back that ends up being a psychotic Oompa Loompa American Indian Shaman. Totally inept and unintentionally funny Exorcist rip-off, but sooooooooo dang funny. The Vista in Hollywood is actually showing this thing as part of a "So Bad It's Good" film festival on March 30th at midnight and apparently Stella Stevens is going to show up to say hello and impart some anecdotes. I think I will be checking that out...on the big screen where it belongs, baby....
11 Minutes Ago (2007)
clever little flick
I'm a little surprised to see low scores on this clever little picture. It was all shot in one day on a very small budget and I think it works pretty well for what it is. It has a nice little romance that plays out in one evening for the female character but the male character has to endure being in love with this woman for months, as he is only able to go back into time to see her for eleven minutes at a time and then wait a while and then come back. And sometimes he comes back before the last time he came back so the work he's done with the girl has to be redone...it's maddening enough to try to seduce a woman chronologically, imagine jumping in and out of the space-time continuum and trying to keep your "game" on straight. Anyway the way it plays out is real fun. Don't let the fact that there are no name actors in this one...it stands pretty well on its own without Michael Caine (new ordinances require Michael Caine to appear in every major Hollywood release in case you were not aware of this). Anyway, check it out...pretty fun.
The Apple (1980)
ohmygodohmygodohmygod
In this case awful means excellent, so the scale is reversed. This is one the most ill-conceived musicals I have ever seen or heard of. The songs are gloriously bad, yet somehow catchy in a deodorant commercial sort of way. I love this dang movie. If you are in the LA area, the New Beverly is showing it on a double bill with another fantastic so-bad-it's-good movie Plan 9 from Outer Space...which is like the most famous and fantastic bad movie of all time. These types of "anti classics" are so fun to watch, you can't take your eyes off the screen wondering what the filmmakers were thinking. Especially with The Apple, cause it's a pretty big budgeted affair. Too bad they did not try to get people who could actually write a song. Well, too bad for the producers, but not today's audiences. Anyway like I said, it's at the New Beverly in LA on January 30th with Plan 9...I will be there for sure. Awesome awesome awesome....
