Fanny Hill (2007)

Moral of the Film - Sex is Overrated
27 September 2012
I started watching the film thinking that it was the usual period drama but was soon bombarded with scene after scene of nudity and sex. And I thought, surely there has to be some reason for this. It soon dawned on me that apart from the feminist theme and the blurring of morals whereby we tend to sympathize with Fanny and justify her actions, the underlined message is that sex is overrated. The film gradually deromanticizes sex until it becomes grotesque.

For those of you who are starry-eyed, this film will ground you in the realities of human relationships. I give it a 6 because the plot was implausible.

Haunting!!!
21 January 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Wisps of memory of The Last Unicorn had haunted me ever since I watched it as a child not knowing the title. The only memory i had of the animated movie was its eerily romantic setting and a disturbing image of the escape of the unicorns from the sea. It is only recently that I discovered this gem by chance on the internet.

The Last Unicorn is appealing to both children and adults. Disney has indeed brought to life and immortalized the lovable characters and the medieval setting of Peter. S. Beagle's enchanting novel. There was talk of a remake but I feel that no amount of effort and creativity could capture the magic and romance that perfumes the air in this beautiful animated movie.

To sum up the movie. It's DISTURBING, HAUNTING, SAD, ROMANTIC, MAGICAL.

Disappointing, but watch it for its scenic beauty.
31 December 2007
I was very eager to watch this movie and finally had the time to watch it this afternoon. What a disappointment! The setting is picturesque, the story romantic and the characters well cast, but the screenplay is flawed. The dialogs between Paul (Keanu Reeves) and Victoria (Aitana Sanchez-Gijon) are lame and have a staccato effect which hampers the fluidity of expression. Furthermore I felt that Keanu Reeves was struggling to stay in character and match the passion exuded by Aitana. It is the minor characters who ultimately salvage the movie with their wit and colourful personalities.

If you like romance with substance then this movie will disappoint you.

However, the film is worth watching for its Keatsian setting oozing with passion and its few lovable minor characters.

A movie baseball fans will love
30 December 2007
Let me confess that I know nothing of baseball and if not for Drew Barrymore I would not have picked up this movie. The plot is predictable and the excessive focus on baseball might not appeal to everybody. However I wasn't bored at the end of the movie. There was good chemistry between the two lead characters and the blend of humour and romance was just right. There is also a lesson to be learned - the importance of give and take in a relationship and the need to be sensitive to one's partner's needs. All in all a light romantic comedy ideal for when you have nothing better to do or when you just need to relax and unwind. If you liked this movie you'll also enjoy Never Been Kissed and Ten Things I hate About You.
