All the Bright Places (2020)
No chemistry
The acting was really bad in a lot of the scenes in the first half of the movie. I felt kind of like I was just watching actors read lines rather than actually being IN the movie if that makes sense. Maybe that's just me because my mum enjoyed it and cried at the end.
Spoilers:
When they kissed for the first time I felt like it was so random there was hardly a build up we couldn't even tell that the girl liked him yet and then all of a sudden they kissed?
The main character guy just gives me the ick for some reason & I didn't feel any chemistry between them
The second half of the movie when he reveals more about his struggles with mental health and when he beats up the guy and starts crying and stuff I thought that was really powerful also the scene where she found out he died was done really well.
I didnt cry at the end because I didnt feel attached enough to the characters
I cant believe he killed himself now she has 2 losses to get over, honestly quite a selfish thing to do especially knowing she was suicidal and he already scared her once with that
I really liked the ending and the overarching message of the movie when she was reading that thing in front of the class .
Call Me by Your Name (2017)
Excellent movie
Beautiful cinematography- I loved every single shot & the colour grading was great. The acting by both leads was PHENOMENAL. I loved the setting and the music.
Spoilers:
I loved their relationship at the start and how it was a bit of a slow burn & a forbidden romance trope. I think it shed light on what being gay was like in the 80s really well. As their relationship developed I had to pause and take a breath between some scenes and I was giggling and kicking my feet and stuff haha I loved them together.
I loved Elio so much and really felt sorry for him, I wish they had a happy ending together because they really did love each other they just couldn't be together becuase of the social expectations of society at the time. I feel like it's realistic and raw because not all relationships get a happy ending especially not gay relationships in the 1980s especially when Oliver's parents were homophobic.
I cried at the end when Elio was upset and didn't want Oliver to leave and when he was throwing up and crying. When Oliver called and said he got engaged and then Elio started crying by the fireplace was soooo sad :(
I LOVED the message at the end of the movie when his dad said that when you feel something towards someone you should allow yourself to feel it and not hide it - that really resonated with me.
Overall I think this is a brilliant movie and is very well made, it is perfect.
Challengers (2024)
Hard movie to follow
Most of the scenes were shot very well and creatively, however the POV shots felt a bit out of place, a bit like I was watching a Go-pro vlogger or something.
The music was okay but the dubstep/electronic music was overused and got boring fast.
The storyline was hard to follow with the constant flashbacks and fast forwards - a linear plot would've been better and produced more tension.
The ending felt incomplete to me, maybe I missed something.
I felt like the movie was unclear overall and hard to interpret.
Spoilers:
My favourite part of the movie was the chemistry between Art and Patrick, I wish they explored that more and just ditched Tashi.
I didn't like Tashi's character she was manipulative and I didn't understand why she was forcing Art to keep playing tennis. (Love Zendaya though)
I also didn't understand why Tashi started hating Patrick? Was it just because he wasn't there when she got injured?
One Day (2024)
SO SO GOOD
I went into this series thinking I was going to be watching a cheesy, light-hearted romance and I was so wrong. I have never had a show make me sob so much. I think going into it with no expectations or having heard anything about it prior made it so much better.
I loved how each episode was a year later and we got to see how their lives changed each year. Despite living very separate lives their stories continued to intertwine.
The acting was phenomenal and brought the characters to life. The characters were complex and I felt so connected to them.
It's definitely not for everyone, it's more character-focused rather than plot-focused which is what I prefer. If you like the coming of age genre I think you would like this.
Give the first episode a fair chance because it honestly was so much better than I initially expected it to be.
