CSI: Vegas (2021)
Enjoyed watching this reboot of my favorite TV series of all time
Yes, I thought the acting of the new cast was a little stilted, but this is a new group of people being introduced and we're getting background on them in this first episode. I may go back and watch the first episodes of the original series; will probably see the same sort of introduction to the characters. I wish they could have gotten more of the original cast to at least do cameos. It was just a relaxing and enjoyable hour (or 42 minutes!) of TV. I only watch 2 TV series these days (can't get into any of the newer series), so this is an addition to my usual light TV schedule.
The Golden State Killer: It's Not Over (2018)
Recommended viewing for facts of GSK case
Straightforward documentary, none of the over-the-top dramatic pauses that are on so many of these true crime shows. I believe this series was released just prior to the arrest of Joseph J. DeAngelo. Both Paul Holes and Ms. Daly, two of the many police officers assigned to this case, were excellent at giving the facts of the investigation. Even though we now know who the killer was, I recommend watching. It is terrifying. I have checked my door locks twice every night this week.
The Two Jakes (1990)
Watch as a standalone movie
It has been years since I've seen Chinatown; I plan to watch it again this weekend after watching The Two Jakes last night. But this movie is head and shoulders above most mysteries currently being made.
Bell Witch: The Movie (2007)
Lame
I grew up knowing the Bell Witch legend since Betsy Bell Powell eventually settled and died in my home county. I've actually been to the Bell farm in Robertson County, but the cave was closed at the time so I wasn't able to tour. First of all, the Bell farm is in the rolling hills of Middle Tennessee, not the mountains of Eastern Tennessee. And while some of the details of the "haunting" were depicted correctly in the movie, I have never heard the part about Williams (Richard) finding a body in the cave from which he removed decorated pins. And the actor playing John Bell was all wrong--he appears to be at least 20 years younger than John Bell would have been. As someone else mentioned, Lucy Bell was quite a few years younger than John, but in the movie she looked 20 years older. I don't know why they couldn't just stick to the legend as it has been told over the years without making up events; the legend itself is terrifying enough.
The Town That Came A-Courtin' (2014)
Not terrible, but predictable
This was an easy movie to watch while multi-tasking. I don't usually watch these Hallmark Channel type movies, but made an exception for this one because it was set in fictional Bliss, Mississippi, my home state. So I am pretty critical about the fake Southern accents. Do movie and TV people realize that no Southerner of my generation or younger drops their r's anymore? They apparently listen to audio of Eudora Welty or Shelby Foote and think that's how we still speak here. Unfortunately, we don't. The town, especially the B&B, featured in the movie was beautiful, but there are no towns or buildings in Mississippi that even remotely look like them. As I suspected, the credits revealed the movie was filmed in Canada. Could they not even take a half-hour to go online and look at a few photos of Southern small towns?
