The Hurt Locker (2008)
Nearly...
This film has a lot going for it. Mostly the directing which was impressive the whole way through. Unfortunately the characters let it down. Although there are several occasions when the character talk about themselves and about being back home I still feel we never truly get to know the characters. Which means we never really care about them, and the fact that the lieutenant doesn't care about his own life doesn't help things one bit.
As for realism etc, I hear its being praised a lot, though I'm not a soldier so I can't comment. I will say that the boys don't seem to have a lot of backup throughout the film. They seem to do an awful lot themselves. But maybe that's just how it is.
Bottom line, I enjoyed this movie, but its not up there with the classics greats. In a way maybe its too close to the fact, as in I feel like I'm reading the daily newspaper. The story seems so familiar, its being played out right now half way across the world. Don't get me wrong, the story of those soldiers deserves to be told and retold, but in the movie it feels a bit non inventive.
The whole film long I got the feeling that there wouldn't be a satisfactory ending and there wasn't. I mean the war isn't over etc, so they keep going where you left them off. This is the major problem, there's a start middle and more middle but this is a film not real life so where's the ending?
Somebody Up There Likes Me (1956)
A like it - love it production
I'll keep this short: I watched it over Christmas last year (2008) with my brother and father. It really deserves that all but destroyed label of 'all round entertainment'. Nowadays that refers to useless crap, but I mean it in a 1950s sense. Proper entertainment. Leaves you feeling happy but with that little something extra that you take away from it. A true all rounder.
Brilliant. Don't think. Watch.
Well so much for keeping it short. It turns out that I need 10 lines. Well on we go: Ever wonder where Stallone got the idea for Rocky, I mean the guy doesn't look too bright you know yet he did it, he made one of the best movies of all time, well in a way this is the original. The down and out bum fighter, fighting to pay the bills and buy some food, gets a chance at the big time, gets a chance to make something of himself, make his family proud. Yet his path isn't without obstacles, from the mafia to romantic commitments. Add some very humorous and original 'fun for all the family' jokes and you have yourself one hell of a film.
Baby (2007)
"Live Fast, Kill young" - a mantra is born
Before I watched this film I came on here to check it out, I didn't find much which was surprising, not a lot of comments, I don't think there is even a summary...nothing. I mean some seriously s*** films on this site even get a summary. But thankfully I went on and watched it. Definitely not disappointed. This is a little gem of a film. It gets everything just right, from the action to the romance. The dialogue is short, effective and often intense. This film really sucked me in.
You've probably all read the hype and the comparisons to 'Boyz in the Hood', and I'll admit that such talk did scare me too as that is just one of those films that cannot be touched, just cannot be improved upon. Baby is different, yet just as compelling and thought provoking etc, its got all that deep moving s***e, with some kick ass action thrown in. This isn't just a 'Friday night in' movie. This is one for the collection to be watched again and again. Makes you ask yourself what you stand for and how far you'd go? (Yeah there's some of that deep s***e I mentioned earlier).
As for which way the door is swinging I would say its more a guys film, but ladies there is some romance in there and its not all non-stop violence so don't be too put off. Though for the lads out there; the main characters in this film will make you look like a complete pussy in front of your woman so you may not wanna watch it with her.
Anyway bottom line sort your life out and check this out.
