Braindead (1992)
Ewww...
Simply delightful. You can spot the Sam Raimi influence a mile away...in fact, all I could think as I watched this movie the first time was that it was a bizarre love child of "Evil Dead" and "Strictly Ballroom." Peter Jackson exorcising his inner demons = pure genius. I laugh so hard I nearly bepiss myself every time I see the zoo scene. Check it out if you're not very squeamish.
Wilde (1997)
Delicate and crushing
The acting in this film was superb. As had many viewers--I suspect-- I had only seen Stephen Fry in the Blackadder and Wodehouse series. How delightful to find another actor intelligent and flexible enough to range from Melchett to Oscar Wilde! One cannot help but watch his face very carefully, waiting to see the mask slip. He seems strangely delicate in his huge, crushing frame...A nice follow-up movie to Velvet Goldmine, especially once you know that some of the dialogue from the latter was lifted from the works of Oscar Wilde.
Velvet Goldmine (1998)
Smart...Very Smart
For me, the most compelling of the story's characters is Arthur. The fact that--as "The Onion" pointed out--in the investigation of Brian Slade's career we learn more about Arthur than about Slade is a fresh innovation to the tried-and-true "Citizen Cane" formula. The debate over the culmination of his hero-worship relationship with Curt Wild will reign in my head for many a year.
