Midnight Cowboy (1969)
This is the least-enjoyable film-watching experience I have ever had.
If Midnight Cowboy hadn't beaten Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid for the Best Picture Oscar, I'd probably just hate it a lot, and forget about it. But it did, and it keeps showing up on people's lists of great "not-to-be-missed" movies. I know there must have been worse movies made, but I haven't seen them. I usually enjoy movies, even ones that other people find fault with. I think it's possible for a film to have many flaws and still be worth my time. It is certainly possible for a movie to have disturbing images, or leave me unsettled, and still be worth my time.
Midnight Cowboy made me feel bad about being a member of the human race. It made me want to ask for my money back, even though I watched it for free when my boyfriend worked at a video store.
Midnight Cowboy is what will be playing on every screen in Hell, in the unlikely event that I have been wrong all along about the loving nature of God.
