Man v. Food (2008)
Best Show on TV
There are a lot of shows on television that travel to a variety of locations to show off the different foods that we can eat, but Man V. Food is far and away the best of the bunch. Host Adam Richman travels the country to find the great pig-out places all over our great land. He also tackles a food challenge in every city he visits, ranging from 15 dozen oysters in New Orleans, to a giant burger challenge in Boston, to the Don Juan Taco Challenge in Austin, Texas(You have to watch the reruns on the Travel Channel to view the winner). Sometimes the winner is man, sometimes the winner is food. No matter who reigns victorious it is still an extremely entertaining half hour, even if you are not a big fan of these types of show. What sets it apart from other shows in this category and other shows period, is the host, Adam Richman. First of all, I can say, Adam can eat. You can clearly see after watching a few episodes that he is also having a lot of fun in what I would classify as one of the top twenty jobs in the United States. He gets to travel, he gets to eat. What else can I say. Beyond that he is intelligent about food, he is extremely funny for someone who has just downed seven pounds of burger and fries, and the viewer even gets to learn a little food history. Beyond that, its just fun to sit on the couch and say "I can do that" or "There is no @#$*& way I could eat that." So if you want to watch the best show on TV right now, turn to the travel channel. And Adam, if you ever want to try the Carnivore Pizza Challenge again, Give me a call. Great show.
Gran Torino (2008)
If this is Clint's acting finale, it is a grand one!
I saw this movie a few days ago at a pre-screening in Denver, Co. I have only been to a handful of movies in my life in which there was applause at the end. This was one of them. I also found myself cheering for an acting performance that will remain historical. Mr. Eastwood's portrayal of Walt Kowalski is perfect in the way that he envelops the character, a character with flaws, inner turmoils, and ultimately a willingness to accept what he has always perceived as unacceptable. There are other good performances, but this is Clint Eastwood's movie. He is the focal point of every scene. He is at times very serious, at times very funny, but he is always believable. There are a few scenes where he could have rekindled Dirty Harry, but he didn't. Dirty Harry, also one of my favorites, was super-human, Walt Kowalski is human, with human characteristics. When Walt is a smart-ass, it is very funny, but we also see that turmoil that creates the behavior. Many out there will say that this is just a 78 year old actor trying to look tough one last time, but they would be missing the heart and soul of this performance. We see this toughness, but it, in no way diminishes the true depth of the character or Clint Eastwood's portrayal of the character. We should all see this great actor/director and this great performance on Oscar night.
The Proposition (2005)
Transcends the Genre
This is a violent, bloody, and beautiful movie that deserves to go down in history as one of the best Western movies ever made. The three stars, Danny Huston, Guy Pearce, and Ray Winstone all deserved Oscar nominations, as well as the cinematography. Whether you like his character or not(Its hard at times to like any of the characters) Ray Winstone gives one of the best quiet performances I have ever seen. There are two scenes, one of Sheriff Stanley offering a proposition to Charlie Burns and the performance of the song Peggy Gordon that will give you shivers. This is a great piece of Australian cinema that should not be missed. One of the best movies of the last five years.
