The Man in the Hat (2020)
Quirtky as in Bad
A waste of good cellulose. Dull, ridiculous, with iffy acting on the part of Hines. Some may have thought it might be saved as a travelogue of France. If so, France is a very ordinary place. I know that to be untrue - so they must have purposefully left out anything that wasn't mundane and ordinary. No plot line whatever. Give me Jacques Tatti anytime over this movie.
Cold Mountain (2003)
Great flick, but.....
This is a beautiful movie, replete with a boat load of wonderful actors all doing wonderful jobs. It is delight to see. I would like to quibble about some details. Nicole Kidman is just toooo glamorous - even after hardscrabble has set in, she is cruising around in an A-line, black, calf length black coat fit for a stroll down 5th ave. The house Ada Monroe (Kidman) lives in is just ridiculous - it looks like one of those movie lot fake homes in a yuppie upper middle class suburban developer neighborhood. I really don't think they lived that way, and they used whitewash which essentially washed off and needed painting every two years or the wood started showing. This thing could have been in an ad for Duron or Martin-Senour paints. Why the fake big bertha rifled Dahlgrens in the Confederate lines. They should have used a appropriate artillery piece. Frankly showing the fact that the Union Colonel in charge of the attack was seriously drunk and never left his hovel during the attack would have added more verisimilitude and also the hopelessness of the whole affair. Jude Law was incredible - his face changed perceptively from an untouched rural to a truely depressed, horrified, and worn out man whose only desire to keep at it was his drive to see Ada. Great movie though - don't miss it.
The House of Mirth (2000)
This is a time waster
While I concur with the comments about Gillian Anderson's considerable beauty and acting, the direction of this film was so bad that nothing could have saved it. It is ponderous, it looked more like a play than a movie, with terrible scene transitions. It was stilted and its flow was herky jerky - If you must, watch it for Ms. Anderson - or maybe, like many others have mentioned, read the book first - otherwise save yourself some time and skip it.
Behind Enemy Lines (2001)
Basically a waste of time
Gene Hackman, good as always, but he is just a schil to get more paying customers to see this movie. The only good parts in this movie are the flying and Carrier scenes. This is a very sloppy and lazy movie. There are so many unrealistic scenarios in this movie you may just as well read a comic book. The fighter is making all kinds of evasive manuevers and the missile(s) follow his every move - not realistic. One missile grazes the aircraft from a front on aspect and damages the plane and itself, then turns around, quickly running the aircraft down and then exploding, tearing the airplane in half. These damned missles are rugged little buggers, far more rugged than any missle currently known to man, and on top of that, they have incredible range and manueverabiltly. When the Serbs see our hero fleeing up the hill, they begin firing at him, bullets hitting all around him. He goes over the crest of the hill and the bullets keep on coming - how is that? These bullets can go through and over hills?? The tank in the initial scene in the open plain magically appears on the other side of this steep hill - these Serbs are mighty clever guys and have some mighty awesome tanks, capable of traversing a very steep hill (small mountain), with incredible speed. Further, there is NO character development so one cannot really connect with the actors. This is a real stinkeroo, but if you are just in the mood for a little mindless, jingoistic entertainment, knock yourself out.
Sunshine State (2002)
Very good movie, great personality profiles, horrible color.
Thought the story line was very unique. Edie Falco really shined in this role - stole the movie. This is no action film, but a relaxed look at the characters in this small Florida town which was very interesting. The cuts were very sudden and quirky, almost jarring, and the quality of the print color was terrible. Seems like someone must have left the film cans in the back of the car in 120 degree heat - the color is all washed out, dull and bland. I hope this print was unique and the others have improved color.
