Baraka (1992)
Wow...how amazingly...
Awful. Had to watch this in English when we were studying Romanticism. Like the Romantics, this was a bunch of plop about how awful things are without mentioning what advantages (even if few) have come of technological advancement (ie: medicine, mass produced books making education easier to spread, etc.) and without suggesting how to improve it. Now I'm a leftist, and environmentalist to some extent, but this really was just silly hooey. A bunch of pretentious artsy junk churned out to impress those whose tiny minda enjoyed Memento.
Dragnet (2003)
A pleasant surprise
When I was a kid, I grew up on Nick at Nite's reruns of the late 60s version of Dragnet. I absolutely loved that show, even if my clearest memory of it is how the Blue Boy episode scared the pants off of me. So I was one of the first people to go "aw, crap, what are they doing?!" when I heard about a new Dragnet. I figured ABC had come along to destroy one of my favorite childhood things, just like their parent company Disney ruined Inspector Gadget with that hideous film. I watched the first episode out of a sense of loyalty to the original, so I could tell people every little thing that had been done wrong this time around. Instead, I was telling people how good it was. This new Dragnet may be very different, but there is still that Dragnet FEELING to the show. It feels just like the old one did when I was a kid. It's countless times more like the old one than I thought it would be, and have since watched every episode of it. And, frankly, the cast is great. Ed O'Neil is a fine Friday, and Ethan Embry has realy impressed me. Now here's hoping the network doesn't decide to "retool it"...
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)
Greatest Trek of All
I gave this a ten not because I think it is the greatest film of all times, but at least the greatest Trek, and one of the better Sci-Fi films out there. Doesn't get much better than this as far as Star Trek films go, tho First Contact comes somewhat close.
Catch-22 (1970)
Why? Why why why?
Perhaps the worst adaptation of a book I have ever seen. Please, if you have never read Catch-22, do not think it is anything like this. This is perhaps THE example of the book being better than the film. It's a shame the talent of so many skilled artists was wasted on this thing.
Shane (1953)
I loathe this movie
This is one of the the worst films ever. Even for this 1950s, this was an insanely goofy and over-the-top piece of work. Just...simply horrible. I only saw this because it was for a class, and even the teacher admitted he thought it was horrible, but only showed it because so many people consider it good.
