Boys Klub (2001)
This movie should be used in film school
To show how not to make a movie. Extraordinary in its poverty of ideas, direction, sound and photography. This is a movie full of bad clichés where the director has been influenced by nostalgic movies of the 20s and 30s and did not realise that such saccharine sentiments are not useful if you chuck in the odd uninspired and out of place slapstick moment. I assume family members put the money up for this awful production and I can only hope it did not bankrupt the family. Considering the religious settings I was surprised there was no effort to show a positive opinion of young people. At least the makers dream of making a movie was met. The audience will be poorly disappointed and egg making sounds a great idea.
El laberinto del fauno (2006)
Wonderful use of cinematic imagination
Not going to write much. Other than to comment on how much I enjoyed the exceptional imagining that created this movie. It is a rare movie that you leave the cinema and do not wish for any more detail or story. This was a complete movie and a complete story. The mixture of real life horror with the fantastical world was truly inspired. The effects were incredibly realistic and had me squirm as much as look on in awe. The acting and casting was perfect in every instance. Ivana Baquero was fantastic as the young girl who is caught so easily into a potentially dangerous and magical world, as the real world she is forced to be in is such a horrific war torn environment. Overall I recommend this to anyone who claims to love movies.
The Hours (2002)
Substance over style any day
The comments fall into the two camps of love or hate with some wondering why the negativity is so strong. This movie does not spoon feed the viewer and requires thought. That seems to distress the viewer who expects their emotions to be tweaked for them. The heartfelt aspects of the movie comes from observation of subtlety. It is interesting that the negatives rave about Julianne Moore. She is wonderful but also provides the most melodramatic aspect of performance. Hence she is easier to relate to if you want your thinking done for you. Stephen Daldry will continue to surprise and challenge the movie goer for many years to come. While we all rave about actors it is easy to overlook that the greatest performance is destroyed by a bad director. Daldry continues to draw the performance he envisages.
