San Francisco (1936)
I love Jeanette MacDonald!
11 November 2004
This is a great old film. I have seen it several times, and enjoy it every time. I think Jeanette MacDonald is beautiful, and what a voice! I love to hear her sing.

My mother gave me my middle name of Jeanette after her. It is interesting that a film with so much "fancy" singing

could have been so popular. The general public must have had more class then than now.

It is good to see the "oldies." Many of them are better than today's films.

I certainly like this one.

Wonderful movie!
15 July 2004
I have seen this film twice, and will see it again . It is a wonderful movie. I guess it was released the wrong year, because it certainly deserves awards. It is the best movie of this genre that I have ever seen! It tops them all. I found it to be touching, and yet realistic. I think it will inspire those who watch it. It certainly inspired me to be more kind and compassionate towards others, especially towards those who have a handicap. The film touched my heart! If you can find this movie on television, or at the rental place,

see it. You will not be disappointed.

This is a movie with nothing to admire. Tom Hanks tries to play a gangster.
3 April 2004
This is a sad and terrible movie. Tom Hanks tries to play a gangster but he can never look MEAN! The story is not very good. We are supposed ( think) to have sympathy for Tom because years ago he took the only job he could find to feed his family. This is not believable. Many families were having a very hard time getting food on the table in those days, but how many of them became Hit Men? Instead, they found an honest way to survive. Perhaps someone can fill me in on the ending. Tom was taking his son to his sister's place to leave him for her to raise, but when he got there, the murdering started. The sister was not seen. At the ending of the film the son was walking across the field to a house that looked different from the one where his aunt lived. Who finally ended up rearing him? It's been a while since I saw this film. Perhaps I have forgotten some of the clues. Even though I did not find this movie to be a good one, I liked it much better than American Beauty. That film was absolutely AWFUL!

This is my kind of movie--Clean, entertaining, original.
7 March 2004
This is a great movie! I enjoyed every second of it-nothing dull here. The characters were interesting--the story was great, and I liked the animals too! The scenes of the brothers adventures were very good. I wish more films such as this were made.

Go see for yourself. You will like it. I voted it eight.

The Hours (2002)

A Dreary Film
3 January 2004
I did not like "The Hours." It was hard to find any sympathy for the three woman. I did like Laura, until I saw the end of the film.

The music was nice. That's all I can say good about the movie.

Especially interesting to me!
23 December 2003
This film was very interesting to me, partly because Frank Morris was once in the Granite State Reformatory. I live in the small town of Granite, Oklahoma where the reformatory is located. Just wish we could know if Morris and the two escaped alive, or drowned!

Great in some ways, not so Great in others

Warning: Spoilers
I ran across this little interesting film by accident and stayed with it to the end. It was interesting, and could have been a great study (in my opinion) had it not had the following in it.

SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why did the character Al have to shoot up the building's windows, and why did he have to go to bed with the girl? This is unlawful destruction, and adultery. I do not believe a person has to do these things to "loosen up" and change their lives for the better! I object to such nonsense.

Slow moving, but an original idea that you will remember.
4 June 2003
I liked this film because it was not overly violent nor gross, as so many films are. And it was an interesting study of an original idea.

It portrayed a lonely, old man who lived through other's lives because he had no life of his own. I recommend it and give it 7 stars out of 10.

Awful! Awful! Awful!
1 June 2003
It is hard to believe that others love this film. I found it to be awful. The camera work was bad; the story was crazy. The woman was retarded and the man was cruel. It seemed like a three hour film, but I watched it to the end just to see how silly it would get. I have to admit that the story line was original, but that does not make it good.

A Little Disappointed
22 April 2003
I was a little disappointed in this film. I had heard so many people say that is was SO FUNNY. I did not find it funny. However, I suppose it is better than many films. And why do so many comment on Nia Vardalos' looks? I think she is attractive.

Flowers for Algernon (2000 TV Movie)
Not as good as the short story
28 March 2003
This film might have been more appealing to me had I not first read the short story. It really has to be in story form to get the full impact of the story. I read the short story in Freshman English in college and thought it to be the most touching, tear jerker I had ever read. A wonderful, well written tale!

Chicago (2002)
Sorry Folks! I did not like Chicago!
25 January 2003
I did not like the movie, but I sat through it to the end. Not so my husband; he walked out in the middle!

The only scene I liked was the Puppet one. It was clever and interesting. I give the film a 3 out of 10 .

A very big disappointment!
18 January 2003
Warning: Spoilers
I had been looking forward to seeing this film. Since I liked Fargo and O Brother Where Art Thou, I thought this one would be good. I was disappointed! It was slow and dull.

POSSIBLE SPOILER BELOW.......................................

I did not like the sudden change in the teen. And the scene in the car was certainly not needed!

Haven't Seen it Yet, but......
3 January 2003
I intend to see it. However, as one writer states, the story was told in the film "The Great Imposter" with Tony Curtis. I believe this is based on another man's adventures, so I guess two people pulled this stunt and got away with it for a while!

Plot Full of Holes
4 November 2002
Warning: Spoilers
This one has way too many holes in the plot for me to rate it as being good. I give it a 2 out of 10. SPOILERS BELOW!!!!!!!

I am not a Julia Roberts fan, but she did do a pretty good job in this one. But the part about her being able to pull off the "Pretend" death in the water is just too silly.I like a film that one can view , then look back on it afterwards and see that it all made sense. This one did not! Not recommended.

A Truly Great Movie
24 October 2002
I have read the book three times, and seen the movie four times. It is a great movie, but I really liked the book better.

I think Leslie Howard looks much too old to play Ashley; he looks old enough to be Scarlett's father. I still loved the film. It is one of the greatest ever made. A great story.

Great Great Film!
23 October 2002
I rate this film very highly. It is entertaining, interesting and even inspirational. You will know what I mean when you see the film, and you should see it! I am trying to see all of Cagney's films.Hope to see White Heat next. I really like the old films like this better than most new ones. Old ones get the message across without bad language.

Very good, but not Great!
7 September 2002
Warning: Spoilers
After seeing Mr. Holland's Opus, I was very favorably impressed with the film (all except it was a little long).

Then, on second thought, I have decided some flaws exist that keep it from being a truly great film.

1. Mr. Holland was a little too self-centered. He was more interested in his career than he was in his son. His son should have been his top priority.

2. I did not like the part of the film where it was obvious that he was wishing that he could leave on the bus. I will not go into this, in order to avoid a spoiler. Those who have seen the film will know what I mean.

It was still a more enjoyable film than most that Hollywood makes. I give it a 7, out of a possible 10.
