The Hustle (2019)
Could have been good, but ended up terrible
I assumed this was made in the same vein as Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, I didn't realize it was an absolutely terrible knockoff. Literally the same movie, but with female actors and some slight tweaks so that it wasn't exactly the same movie. The only fault lies with the writers, they lacked any originality. The inability to create any original content has become a common theme with today's writers. I don't mind that this was a knockoff of the Dirty Rotten Scoundrels idea, but damn! They could at least put a different spin on it. Terrible. There are some laughs, but having seen Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, it's just saddening.
Superstition (2017)
A Poor Supernatural Knockoff
I initially saw this and wondered if it was a Supernatural knockoff or if it was something semi-original. Turns out, it was the latter and a poor knockoff at that. In the first episode, they even make a reference to Supernatural "Sam and Dean's" arsenal in their car trunk; so, at least they acknowledge it.
As for the show itself, I gave it 3 stars, not because it's a poor knockoff of Supernatural, because it's not that good. I understand as much as the next person that most of these shows are "B" type flicks. However, the acting is really kind of bad and the nobody seems like they want to really be doing the show. On top of that, it seems like they rushed to unfold/evolve everything in the pilot, which made it less interesting, like they didn't have a good product and were just spit- balling for something to grab you attention.
Because I'm a fan of shows like this, I will stick it out for at least the first season to see if they can settle things out; hopefully they can.
The Curse of Sleeping Beauty (2016)
Great Start, Horrible End
This could have been a really good movie. Although the movie has "Sleeping Beauty" in the title and there is a female that has been asleep for centuries awaiting a kiss; that is where the similarities to the traditional Sleeping Beauty end. The movie provides a great spin on the traditional fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty. The premise is that male bloodline of the Kaiser family has been the caretaker of sorts for the secrets surrounding the Sleeping Beauty. The characters are interesting and meld together very well. The movie progresses along very well and the story line does a very good job of keeping your attention up until the last 15 or so minutes and then it takes a nose-dive into, well, I guess hell. I can't believe someone, anyone, really sat there and said, "Hell yeah, that ending nailed it! Let's release the movie now before we change our minds."
Do I regret watching it? No. Would I recommend someone else watch it? Yes and No. If you have nothing else on your playlist or you're sitting in the hotel room at night by yourself flipping through the channels looking for something to watch, then, by all means, yes.
BrainDead (2016)
Worth Watching
This review DOES NOT bash the show for how it portrays the Republican or Democratic party; that's just ridiculous; however, the show does do an outstanding job at mocking all politics in general!
I will caveat this with the fact that I am fan of Sci-Fi and "B" movies; so, I may have lower standards than most!
I came across this show and decided to give it a go; I had read the summary but was somewhat unsure of what to expect. I waited to write a review until I had watched the first two episodes. With two episodes in, all I can say is that I'm disappointed that this is airing on CBS; only because I believe CBS will fail the show as compared to the show failing CBS.
The humor in the show comes from, in my humble opinion, the fact that the invasion takes place in DC and the ridiculous nature of politics in DC overshadows the fact that an alien bugs have landed on the planet and are slowly taking over mankind. Everyone is oblivious to what is right in front of them.
The story centers on Laurel Healy and how she handles working on her brother's Senate staff after being bribed into the position by her father. The story may seem slow at times, but you really do become invested in the story and what is going on with the main characters.
Give it a try and at least watch the first two episodes before writing it off. Besides, Tony Shaloub is in it and plays a kooky character, that should be justification alone to watch it!
Tusk (2014)
Absolutely Terrible
I used to watch horror movies routinely but have slowly moved away from them. This movie and the many that are exactly like it are just not good. It's cheap shock horror and nothing else. If that's your cup of tea, then you're probably going to like it. However, if you like a quality horror movies, I seriously recommend you look elsewhere.
The idea behind the movie is exposed 30 minutes in, if you didn't catch it in the description. The rest of the movie is centered on the story teller enacting his walrus fetishes on Justin Long.
Agree with one of the other comments about being a "Human Centipede" knock- off. I like Kevin Smith and he probably could have, actually SHOULD have done a better job with this movie.
The description identifies it as a "Comedy Drama Horror"; I'm not sure what exactly was a Comedy about this beyond the story and directing.
Beyond (2014)
Terrible Movie
The movie fails to keep you interested. The story is dry and moves between story lines without any clear intentions. The characters have no draw to keep you interested in what is going on. I'm at a loss as to how I managed to make it through the entire movie. It really wasn't what I was expecting based on the brief description of the movie. The movie was not suspenseful and the struggles of Cole and Maya seemed more relationship based and really didn't have a lot to do with surviving after an extra-terrestrial attack. I'm sure there is a small group out there that "saw the deeper meaning to the movie" but I was not one of them. Do not watch this unless you really have no other movie to watch and then I would still consider doing something, anything else.
Age of Ice (2014)
Wow! How Bad of a Movie Was That
Wow! I normally don't do movie reviews but felt compelled so that nobody else wasted valuable minutes of their life that could have been spent staring at the wall. For starters, the acting was terrible, but to be expected for a B movie. The story doesn't track, bounces around senselessly. I did like how the storm started basically that day and there was already a hard packed snow drift to the top of a pyramid; which the all promptly body surfed down unscathed. Then there's the great logic that a truck winch would struggle to hold a person going down a cliff, eventually pulling the truck off the cliff. Seriously? Oh, one last dig, how about the people freezing to death in their cars while this lot is outside running around? For those that watched, did any of you wonder why nobody bothered letting the kid die? Nothing but a monumental pain the entire movie. Needless to say, beyond terrible.
On a side note, I did select the "spoiler" option, but if you watch the movie, your brain will spoil
