From Scratch (2022)
Beautiful Love Story
This limited series made me laugh and made me cry. The acting was so incredible. The Italian Mother - where did they get her?? Wow. Having dealt with what this family deals with, my heart was broken in so many places. And yet it was very cathartic for me. I did not read the book so no reference point. But I truly was moved by the story, the acting, the locations, the directing, the food metaphors, the journal, the life lessons. I'm shocked someone commented about the age difference. Zoe Saldana played herself at a younger age and older -- lots of actors do that. It's called acting and she did a great job. Bravo, bravo!
Naomi (2022)
Good Solid Start, Loveable Superhero
Clearly there are too many trolls on here giving this show a 1 just to try to make it fail. Naomi is adorable, smart, funny and has her own flaws. I love the fact that she's adopted like Superman and its an interracial family because that's a reflection of our world. Naomi is the first Black female superhero on network TV. As a girl I dreamt of being a superhero but never saw one that looked like me SO THIS IS HUGE FOR ME & MAKES ME SO EXCITED!!! The pilot moved quickly, had some mystery and typical teen issues she's trying to work out. I can't wait to see her backstory unfold and I will be coming back. For the reviews that mockingly called the show "woke" - are saying that there is no such thing as a Black superhero? Is it woke just because a Black female is in the lead? Smh. Wow. I won't spend much time dignifying those comments. This great young actress is intriguing, the show gives you some of the action, humor, and mystery you want from the DC universe and the teen vibes from CW fare. It's deserving of us coming back for more.
Are You Cinderella? (2000)
A Modern Day Fairy Tale in NYC
After a night of tequila and good music, a guy has one night of passion with a dream woman. He wakes the next morning to find her gone, but she left her shoe. It's a very sexy, expensive shoe-- which he believes is owned by a very sexy, exciting woman-- if only he could remember who she was. He goes on a journey through the streets of Manhattan to find her to unexpected results.
This little short was beautifully shot, wonderfully acted and crafted. When the guy went on his search the director used a collage of beautiful women with an infectious score. This was my favorite part, because it portrayed Black women in such a beautiful light, which I rarely see in film. I loved the message that we're all looking for our "Cinderella"-- we do it all the time. In every face, we are looking-- could that be him? Could that be her? Every woman was stunning, but he still had that burning question-- is she the one? He showed the shoe to several women and they thought he was nuts. Good laughs. I've never seen a film with African American leads that had such innocence and charm. Overall, the story-telling was truly unique and the twist on the end... perhaps I could see it coming, but I enjoyed the ride so much, I didn't care. I LOVED THIS FILM.
