The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 (2014)
Didn't live up to expectations
I waited a year for this movie, since The Hunger Games is one of my favourite books and movies. I loved the entire book series and expected to love all of the movies as well, but this one was really disappointing. It followed the book more closely than the first two parts, but this is also the problem. It makes the movie too slow, too boring. There are no exciting parts in this movie whatsoever. Where Mockingjoy part 1 ends, the book starts to become more exciting and beautiful, so I expect Mockingjoy part 2 to be better. The acting is great and the movie is visually beautiful, but as a fan I have to admit that this movie disappointed me. There is no suspense, it's not gripping, you are waiting for something to happen and that moment never comes. Unfortunately.
Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014)
Good, but not great
Sin city: a dame to kill for just isn't as good as I expected it to be. It's definitely not as good as the first Sin city. It lacks the poetry-like lines, and the story just isn't as exciting as the one from Sin city. In Sin city I was on the edge of my seat, wondering what would happen next. Sin city: a dame to kill for just didn't do that for me. There are a few plot holes, and the time line can be confusing. (Some people who were dead in part 1 are suddenly alive, for example, without explanation). There is more gore and nudity in the sequel, but the storyline is far weaker than the one in Sin city. A dame to kill for doesn't have a great plot (if you could even call it one), and that was my biggest disappointment. Sin city was good from start to finish. This sequel feels more like bits and pieces that are put together, rather than a good story. I also really didn't like that Clive Owen was replaced by Josh Brolin. Both actors are good, but I prefer to have the same actors whenever possible, and Clive was more gritty in my opinion.
Overall it wasn't a bad movie, though. It's visually stunning (just like the first)and the acting is top notch. (Joseph Gordon-Levitt has really become an amazing actor!)
Walking on Sunshine (2014)
(Wannabe) copy of Mammia Mia(?)
I've just seen this movie and sadly I must say it failed to impress. The movie tried to copy Mammia Mia: songs throughout the movie, a wedding. Or maybe that's too much to say, it was more of a Glee-ish movie, with Bollywood influences. The storyline is very poor, but that was to be expected. You know how to story is going to unfold just by watching the trailer. What's worse is that most of the actors didn't seem to have chemistry with one another. Compared to Mammia Mia (it's almost impossible not to compare the two), it was kind of bad. In Mamma Mia at least the song choices where chosen right and they fit in the storyline. In Walking On Sunshine the song choices and moments weren't always chosen right. Most of the time those moments were awkward and out of place. I gave 4 stars, because of the O.K. acting (by some actors) and because the singing sounded good.
Escape Plan (2013)
Weak movie
I'm surprised this movie gets a rating of 7.3. I thought the story was very poor. I usually like prison break stories, but this one failed to impress. The plot is ridiculous. I also thought the jokes were lame and sometimes even out of place. (I'll admit: I had to laugh once.)It's like the director didn't know which way to go: serious, exiting, or funny? If the movie hadn't taken itself so seriously (like Red, for example) it would have been much better. I also think Sylverster Stallone is getting too old for this kind of movies. The only reason I rated this movie as high as a 5 is because of Jim Caviezel and his performance.
