USS Seaviper (2012)
Did Not Deliver the Goods
This movie just did not deliver. The acting started off poor and I thought it must get better as the movie plodded along. No it didn't. Some of the CGI worked where others didn't and we kept getting the same old cutaway shot thrown in for good measure. 'Das Boot' it is not. As previously mentioned, I had a problem with some cutaways. The card game was poorly done and the watch in question looked like it came from a dollar store, not the antique it was supposed to be. The lighting was all over the place throughout the movie and sound was bad in places. The supposed German home port looked like it was filmed in a back yard and I can only presume that German soldiers, and Americans at the end of the film, were re enacters who supplied their own vehicles and uniforms. The movie was supposed to be about the Uranium on the German sub but very little was made of this and how they managed to take it from the Germans. Michael Jaques English accent just grated. Just because you throw in a few 'cockney' words,it did not make him English and it did not do his part any favours. He should have been left with his native accent. Why do directors have to have a part in their own movie? Well ask Villani that one. For me that's when I knew I was in for a rough ride. Inexperience from most of the cast, shone like a beacon. In the shack, the radio operator seemed to be having some kind of joke all by himself, his smirking performance in a theatre of war made me rewind to see if I had missed something. I could go on, and what I have said might be a bit harsh, but just because you can can get a bunch of people to stump up cash and hire in a Red to make a movie, people have to watch it and care and quite frankly I didn't.
Pathfinders: In the Company of Strangers (2011)
Waste of a good story
I like a good war film and this is not a good war film. Awful close ups all the time. They should be used for dramatic effect not in every scene or cutaway. Terrible sound as if recorded in a toilet. This was shot on 35mm? What a waste. Civilian period costumes awful. The English country house? Obviously set in in USA. We did not have double glazed front doors, Lelandi firs, and a totally terrible period interior. Dialogue lacked lustre and to be quite honest I didn't care what they said after an hour of meaningless trite dialogue.Acting from the school of bad acting.Fast pace? What movie were you watching? Lighting done with a forty watt bulb and at other times with a exterior floodlight from the Home Depot. The locations were a joke. Have you ever been to Normandy or even researched the locations? They don't have a re-occurring picket fence and country paths but high hedgerows and flat plains. It looked as if it was all filmed on someones country estate. As for the largest exterior set used in a low budget film, I would ask for a refund. Didn't you you do any research yet again. I note the DOP is not mentioned in the enormous credit list. I take it he was too ashamed to put his name to it. Everything was seriously flawed in one way or another and I could go on and on but I have wasted enough time on this already. Why did I give it a 2? The aeroplanes, you could have made more of them.
