Da-reun na-ra-e-seo (2012)
Something is there
The film, while showing promise and alluding to something more than appears on the surface, was quite monotonous to me. I have to say that the acting and direction seemed at times quite amateur. It left me with a feeling of dissatisfaction. As someone said the director is interested in a minimalistic approach to conveying a story and I imagine that he succeeded. It felt more like a rough sketch than a film. In fact it felt to me like 3 short films. Nevertheless, there was something intangible in the characters, something allusive. Again the minimalism lends itself to an ambiguity. Personally, I like ambiguity to a degree but this film was more like a line drawing than a painting. The opening in fact sets the tone for the film. The music that the director chooses, the credits and the acting all give you that feeling that you are not watching real human beings fleshed out but character studies.
It's a Disaster (2012)
Funny moments
While the movie had its moments, it wasn't one that you might remember years to come. But all in all it was entertaining enough to sustain one's attention throughout. At times it was predictable and had moments where it lulled. A few predictable moments and a sense that it really wasn't going anywhere and that the writer didn't really know how to end it. However, overall a 3.5 star movie i feel. The end of the world theme has been done countless times and I had a foreboding feeling that this film would go down the same road as a movie I watched recently with steve corell. But much to my surprise it remained darker and less formated (although it had its moments as well). The problem with "independent cinema" is that it's like alternative music. It gives you a reaction to the mainstream however it is not a genre in and of itself. Much of what is touted as independent remains to be a slightly altered version of the mainstream. I still prefer the quirkier alternative to its forefather but independent film is in my view a misnomer.
The House of Yes (1997)
Trite, predictable and poorly acted
Very poor!
I am very tired of these kinds of movies. They seem to be a reaction against Hollywood. And in the end these "independent" movies are just as trite and empty.
The first 5 minutes are intriguing and comedic. Afterwards, you get the sense that it becomes more and more of a play. Which I am not sure that there is any purpose in filming a play. I would imagine that the play would be a lot better. With the psychological dimension, a play can bring the viewer to imagine more than a film. But to film basically a play, you get the least of both world, in my opinion. Unless it is done in a very original way, like dogville. This movie just seemed trite and transparent to me.
