Cry Funny Happy (2003)
Watching a Train Wreck is More Interesting
I took today off, and I don't feel like watching soaps, so I have the Sundance Channel on right now. What a mistake!
This movie irritated me from the minute I turned it on. Yet, as the exercise in scatalogical drivel continued, I was transfixed. How could something this pseudo-pretentious get funded? I have to find out.
Pretentious is not even the appropriate descriptor. For havens sake, with lines like "I have changed, and I thought you had changed", the script should have been burned.
The only character I vaguely liked was Naima, and only because she doesn't speak English---or so we think. The minute she spoke about Reza, the last tiny shred of dignisty in this film evaporated.
I should sue the Sundance Channel for this tripe. An hour and a half of my life that I will never get back again.
Va savoir (2001)
C'est aux le Francais, mais...
I caught this film on HBO West on a snow day here on the US East Coast, and found that after the first half hour, I started understanding the French dialogue without the subtitles, because the actors kept repeating OVER AND OVER AND OVER! And, as anyone can tell, I do not speak French, although I have some French Foreign Legionnaire in my unpruned family tree. But, I digress. Initially, I thought the film resembled the Spanish style, with the multiplicity of female characters and emasculated men, mais no! It is French, through and through.
While traveling through Maryland a few years back, I heard a radio station jingle that said: Just because it's old doesn't mean its a classic! Substitute "French" for "old", and there you have my review in a nutshell.
