Brian Regan: On the Rocks (2021)
I want mayonnaise!!!!!!
Brian Regan and Nate Bargatze are my two favorite clean comedians. Don't get me wrong, I love me some Dave Chapelle too. But I appreciate stand up shows you can watch with your family and kids, and they all get it and have a good time.
Hogar (2020)
I should have turned it off, but it was too late.
I guess I'm used to Hollywood formulas. So I kept waiting for the tables to turn, but it was getting deep into the movie, so I hit pause to see how much time is left. There was only 6 minutes left and my heart sank, there is no time for the tables to turn. If you pull for murderers, if you pull for bad guys, and pedophiles to win! Then I guess this is your flick. If you want to see bad guys pay for their crimes, especially pedophiles, you will be disappointed. The only positive going for this movie is the acting.
The dumb spouse formula in Hollywood horror flicks is taken to another level in Europe. They are really dumb. So dumb, bad guys and pedophiles win.
Sebastian Maniscalco: What's Wrong with People? (2012)
The bit on having company over is 100% true.
We opened our doors to everyone in the 80's. I remember my mom buying encyclopedias this way. Nowadays, I look at my camera app to see who's at the door. I tell my kids never ever go to the door. I might take 4 steps down stairs to look at the front door, but not a 5th because I know from the front door view they will see my foot if I'm on that 5th step. In this modern world, we don't get company anymore, just solicitors. And when friends come over, they do exactly what SM talked about, they text... "We are here," or "turning on Grand ave. be there in 1 minute." LOL! Nobody you know rings on doorbells anymore, it's all solicitors.
Ken Jeong: First Date (2019)
62 minutes of obnoxiousness
Ken can be funny in small dosages. The word to describe him when I first saw him in a movie was "obnoxious." I knew that I probably couldn't last long, but I was hoping that he would surprise me. But I was right, very vulgar, very obnoxious. I don't think he's a case of you either love him or hate him, I definitely think there is a middle ground, and that middle ground is movies because you get him in small dosages. Over an hour of just that personality... I couldn't do it, had to turn it off after 10-15 minutes. He gives me that Dane Cook vibe, another obnoxious comedian. That guy fell off the map. Obnoxiousness, the word of the day. LOL! It will get old Ken, change it up a bit.
The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires (1974)
Shaw Brothers + Hammer Films = GENIUS!
Talk about nostalgia! In the 80's, nothing was better than Black Belt Theatre on KCOP on a lazy Sunday, but what was equally awesome was Elivra's Movie Macabre hour that came on in the evening. Many of the kung fu flicks dubbed for Americans were made by Shaw Brothers studios. These dubbings are the stuff comedians reference to in 80's stand-up comedy, where they move their lips without saying anything because the audio is delayed. Likewise, many of the movies that Elvira hosted on her Macabre hour were Dracula and horror flicks made by Hammer Films. These two studios came together and made a flick combining martial arts and Dracula? What in the world!! Am I dreaming? This is too awesome!
All I Want for Christmas Is You (2017)
Forget the few bah humbug reviews...
Forget the few bah humbug reviews. You know reviews will always be bias towards the negative side since Mariah is involved. What the heck do kids know about the quality of the cartoon, the quality of Mariah's music, etc. It's a basic story that every children can relate to, and if they're glued to the screen, what more can you ask for?
Fortress (1985)
A little like Lord of the Flies
At 12 years old, this movie rocks! At 35, it's illogical. LOL. When I saw this movie as a kid, I was fully immersed. Probably due to the fact that children identify with children. So I remember the movie was more thrilling and tense. As an adult, the movie annoyed me. LOL. I wanted to hear more about this RANSOM plot. What were the masked men thinking? How was this a good plan at all? Why did they leave them unattended at the cave? Then they left them unattended again with just one guard at the barn. Then finally, the left then unattended again in the last cave scene. Instead of getting the kids, which I thought was the objective, the masked men stood outside the cave making taunting noises. I thought they wanted to kidnap them? What is going on here? Of course it's give and take. Though the movie is illogical in terms of the action sequences, as an adult, I can understand the subtle themes. I saw hints of LORD OF THE FLIES, which is pretty deep for a TV movie. What happens when you're left alone with nature, but with no law and authority? Just like LORD OF THE FLIES, the children almost became savages in the end. Also, one of the girls was not quite a girl anymore and was growing up. These are subtleties that you don't get when you're 12 years old viewing this movie.
So though it's not quite as enjoyable as when I was young, at least now, I have a full comprehension, and it's still a great nostalgic flick.
