Gantz (2010)
some things work and some don't
I really wanted to like this film. There were great effects in it. The story seems to follow the anime series well. Its got cute Asian boys in leather in it and the acting is somewhat decent. So what is my main hangup with this film? I completely lose interest when I watch the characters stand there when looking stupid when they could have fired off multiple rounds from weapons or could have easily defeated some enemy quickly. But what do they all do? They all stand around with gawking faces while watching the aliens pretty much destroy them. The most insulting part is when they are inside the museum and the shiva type statue decides to wait around while the injured characters have their big dramatic moments and then decide to fight. The amount of times both the good guys and bad guys could have easily finished each other off are ridiculous. This to me is just bad directing/timing and something I cannot seem to forgive.
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010)
not as bad as one expects
I know a lot of people seem to hate Twilight. Either they don't get it or think the whole teen romance thing is retarded. But those instantly closing their minds without giving it a shot are missing out. I genuinely enjoyed this film. I thought it was better than the second one and it had some decent storyline to it. The feeling I get a lot of times is that people hate this film because its too mainstream, too big and hyped, whatever. But they don't seem to understand the characters. They are, for lack of a better term, acting like old farts who just like to complain. I did enjoy this film and I'm starting to get used to all the characters to where I get to know them better. The action was a lot better than I would have expected for this type of film and the effects were okay. One should at least try and watch this film openly before just badmouthing it.
Fading of the Cries (2008)
I liked it but draw your own conclusions
It took me a few minutes to contemplate the film I just watched. But after a short while, I came to the conclusion this movie was decently entertaining. I thought the characters were kind of interesting although a little rushed. The movie starts right in with the action and slows down shortly in the middle only to really pick up at the last third of the film. I did like how there has been nothing quite like this that I've seen before.
I don't think that there will be enough blood for the die-hard romero gore fans. For the Twi-hards, there isn't enough romance. Fpr the heavy film buffs and critics, the acting isn't quite there. For those into special computer effects, they aren't bad but nothing groundbreaking that I haven't seen before, although I really liked the masked guy turning into crows.
So why did I give this a 7 rating? I enjoyed it because I wasn't expecting a romance or a bloody horror. I got an entertaining action fantasy which led to a satisfying ending. It was very fast and gave me a fun experience. But what really impressed me is that they were able to do so much for an independent film.
I recommend you watch it and draw your own conclusions. The largest issue for some I think may be that this film crosses so many genres. So depending on what your expectations are will determine how you feel. I really didn't go in expecting much and was pleasantly entertained.
