The Frankenstein Chronicles (2015)
Great start, which promises to get better!!
Having watched the first episode last night, i am very impressed.
The show centres on John Marlott, who after an unsuccessful opium case, finds a dead girls body on the shore of the marshes. However this was not just one dead girl, but parts of many! So what ensues after is inspector john Marlott being put on the case to find the culprit.
Set in a bleak and dark London, the setting looks fantastic and eerie. The story seems clever, weaving the traditional Frankenstein story with real life London, nothing looks like it will be too far fetched at the moment, but has the capabilities of being so?
The acting is superb. Albeit the first episode it a little slow, Sean Bean carries it along by us the viewer being invested in his character with a troubled past. Bean has always had a uncanny knack of making the viewer transfixed on him, excellent screen presence. The supporting cast are also notably excellent too, with Richie Campbell as Nightingale (his partner) and Robbie Gee as Billy Oates also captivating.
The first episode finishes leaving the viewer intrigued, not waiting for episode two to see which direction the show will take, the tradition Frankenstein story with bolts in his neck? Or a more contemporary mad scientist detective case? Or maybe a mixture of both?
We will have to wait and see, but i will certainly keep watching.
Quantum of Solace (2008)
not as good as Casino Royale, but still an excellent film
After coming out of the cinema after seeing Quantum of Solace, i thoroughly enjoyed it. Admittedly both Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace are not strictly "bond films" but i believe they have moved on for the better.
The action sequences in Quantum of Solace are fantastic, as is Daniel Craig. In this film bond is even colder and more ruthless, however it works really well for this storyline. It also includes a stronger plot them most bond films, however it is sometimes diluted by all of the action scenes, but thats being picky. A mention must go to Mathieu Amalric as the villain Dominic Greene, who plays his smarmy yet sophisticated role off to perfection. The start of his Hollywood career i think.
But on the downside, it did lack something that Casino Royale had, yet i cant quite put my finger on it. Was it because there was no le Chiffre (who Mads Mikkelson played brilliantly)or was bond to cold? or was it just because Casino Royale was just the start of something different, i cannot quite tell.
All in all not as good as Casino Royale, but still one of the better bond films. Worth seeing.
GoldenEye (1995)
One of the best bond films of the "older" style. Should have been more popular
Pierce Brosnans debut as bond with goldeneye took off with a bang for me. Goldeneye is by far the best bond film of the "older" generation, exluding casino royale and quantum of solace. The first reason i say this is the story line is one of the best that a bond film has been, integrating betrayal with world domination.
Brosnan plays bond really well, portraying him being slightly cocky as bond should be, but also with a deep sense of morality in parts. However the star of the show for me has to be sean bean, possibly with the best performance of a bond villain i have ever seen. Bean plays not just a megalomaniac who wants to take over the world, but plays his villain with more depth, someone who was deeply scarred in his childhood. The on screen chemistry between brosnan and bean is unbelievable, suggesting that they do indeed not only hate each other, but were also friends in the past. Watch out for the final confrontation between bond and bean on the cradle, best finale in a movie for a long time
Lasty credit needs to go to the director martin campbell, who i think is a brilliant director (did zorro and casino royale)
Its a shame brosnans other bond films could not keep up to this standard
Gladiator (2000)
Truly fantastic
I can safely say this is one of the best films i have ever seen. i don't think i need to write much about this film as it has all probably been said before. But its directed brilliantly, fantastic but brutal fight sequences, and all of the acting is truly tremendous, especially from Russell Crowe and more importantly, Joaquin Phoenix is unbelievable as the villain. He plays such a creep that u really do hate, but thats a good sign of an actor. The supporting acting is brilliant from Derek Jacobi, Djimoun Honsou etc, supported by a brilliant soundtrack.
U may need to have a handkerchief ready at the end though. Be warned!
Brilliant!
The Island (2005)
Great film! Should have been more popular then it was
Before watching the island i did not no what to expect. I had not really seen it advertised at cinemas, so i was going into it a bit blind. However after watching this film, i can safely say this is one of the finest action movies i have ever seen. It would be a bit harsh on the film to just call it an action movie, as it has a far fetched yet believably storyline that works and is compelling to boot. The action scenes are phenomenal, and although it starts off a little slower, then second half of the film is all action.
Credit must go to the actors in this film also. Ewan McGregor plays his lead role really well and i think his acting is improving with age, and Scarlett johannson surprised me as supporting role.
However my favourite performance in the film has to go to Sean bean, i am a huge fan of him and he can play villains so well (as seen in goldeneye), and he plays his in the island as a mad doctor with no feeling for anyone or anything, and u end up hating him by the end of the film
Credit should also go to Michael bay, his films always turn out to be enjoyable, but not necessarily with an in depth story, however the island integrates both. Well worth seeing
