The Monolith Monsters (1957)
Solid!
I think one of the main reasons this film works so well is because of the sfx, particularly the slow motion used on the falling monoliths to make them look really huge, and the massive rumbling sound they make as they fall.
Growing up in Illinois on the plains, I was always aware of the threat of tornadoes, and when I saw this film as a child, the rumbling of the distant, falling and advancing monoliths made them seem all more real and threatening to me. The overall solid structure (no pun intended) to the plot and the pseudoscience helps too, of course.
My only caveat is that the film could have had much more impact if the monoliths had been allowed to become a much greater threat before they'd finally been stopped. For instance, seeing them destroying a large city containing multi-story buildings would've been breath-taking!
