Equilibrium (2002)
Better than expected
I saw Cubic (aka Equilibrium) a few years ago (think matrix2-time), and really choose it at random from my local rental place. I thought, "what the heck, it can't be that bad...". At the time I was a bit tired on all those soulless action-blow-them-all-movies being produced in Hollywood at a rate of fifteen in a dozen...
Try then to imagine my surprise when it starts out good and then gets better! Even the wifey who normally doesn't like my choice of action-flicks got drawn into the living room (although it might have been Christian Bale's "fault" too...).
Cubic is IMO what Matrix2 and 3 should have been all about. I can't help notice that Cubic does use almost the identical formula action-wise, as does Matrix, but smarter. One could say the main difference is that I care more about what happens to the ppl in Cubic than in Matrix... The characters are more believable. And yeah, the plot seems stupid at times, and the background with WW3 and 4, sure, but it's well done if you get my drift.
It's often an overseen fact that cheapo B and C-grade flicks *have* to rely on a better script and on better acting actors, in order to make it to the public (or rather to the shelves as is more often than not the case) than your regular Hollywood multi-million dollar flick.
Basically Cubic is a Matrix with brains. Supposedly Ultraviolet, by the same director, is based on the same formula, but I haven't seen that one.
Seeing Cubic isn't a bad idea actually. 8-)
The Incredible Petrified World (1959)
Non-existent plot
Must've blinked somewhere in the film, as I seem to have missed the plot entirely... Also some viewers mention a gila monster or some such fighting; I didn't see that either. Maybe I have the directors cut. I bought this film in a box called "50 SciFi DVD Classics", and I'm pretty sure the intention of this box was really to include some really hilarious turkey shots. This film however, was entirely pointless. For example, what's with the man they find in the caves?? Who is he? Why's he there? And another thing, the film title is misleading! No petrified things, only a underwater cave. Seriously, I've seen a lot of bad films in my day, but this one just doesn't cut it. Not even with turkey standards. It's not even bad enough to be laughed at!
Moulin Rouge! (2001)
Woa!
It was a late friday I think. Nothing interesting on the tv, so I and my girlfriend went down to the video-store. NOthing interesing there either, so we (well, actually mostly I...) settled for MR. I mumbled something about gay-icons and musicals something or other in general, and similar stuff and prepared to sleep through most of the movie. Consider when the movie took a grip of me. Wow! I've never seen a musical like this. The actors were great! It was like Ewan and Nicole really were in love. Amazing... ANd it wasn't long ago I saw Ewan starring in SW2 - Attack of the clones. Man, this actor is versatile. And Nicole then. I last saw her in The Others which also kept me on the edge, which is knda unusual for a american movie. Yeah, I know, you ppl are the best and everything, but movies are not your thing. It's like all hollywood-movies are made according to formular 1A, and always with that happy end... Bah! Anyway, along comes MR and the friday was saved. Great movie this, drama, comedy, music. It's got it all! Go see it!
