The Apparition (2012)
I should've known.
Never seen twilight but I knew Ashley Greene was in the movie, and when I saw that she was in this one, my instincts were telling (screaming) NO! But, I said, hey, how bad can this really be. I'm a wimp when it comes to scary movies, but this one had me sitting on my couch with still eyes wondering, "Was that supposed to scare me?" The acting on average was - well, average - for most characters, but I must say Ashley Greene was so ridiculously amateur in this film I felt like I was watching an abc family special. I feel like she was casted for eye candy, and not much else. The story line is so predictable that it's unpredictable. Like, you'll be thinking - oh, well - duh that would happen. The characters are astonishingly stupid. The plot is dry. Not entertaining. Not even scary. Don't waste your money, your time, your life. Watching grass grow will probably be more mental stimulation than this movie ever could be.
The Vow (2012)
Not believable
For me, the movie started off really strong, but by then end I was rolling my eyes and giving myself face palms. I'm still not sure why Channing Tatum even has a legitimate career as an actor, because in every movie I see him in, he plays the SAME DAMN CHARACTER: the supposed hunk, who's ultra man, but also sensitive and "sweet." He always does that stupid chortle followed by his shy/stupid word stuttering. I wish I could say that Channing Tatum single handedly killed this film, but unfortunately Rachel McAdams was a major culprit too. For me, this is probably one of Rachel's most disappointing performances. I didn't believe her character, because there was no passion. I didn't believe that she loved her husband...I just didn't believe her because she was so detached and cold. Not to mention her character was so annoying, just because you lose your memory doesn't mean you become a whole other person. But - maybe that's just the directors fault. What I find really disheartening about this movie is that it's actually based on a heart wrenching story about a woman who lost her memory, and through her faith in God and her husband she rekindled their love. However, I feel like in the midst of the director striving to be non secular, he completely lost the heart and passion of the whole story. All in all this felt like a watered down, insincere story about two supposed lovers who never really loved each other at all. Not impressed.
A Walk to Remember (2002)
Sweet Movie
It's funny because this movie has been out for almost 10 years now, and I had never taken the time to really sit down ad watch the whole thing in one sitting. From the bits I had seen, the movie was cheesy and predictable. But when I sat down yesterday, and watched every scene from start to finish, I realized that this is actually a really beautiful movie. Its a story about love and faith. At times, Mandy Moores acting skills were a little gigglerific, but as a viewer you almost look over it, because the character she plays is such a beautiful person, both inside and out (I can't tell you how many times I commented on Mandy Moore's beauty in this movie). It's really a good movie, about the power of love. I would recommend it to any romance lover.
For Colored Girls (2010)
Not the brightest bulb in the chandelier...
When I saw the previews for this movie entitled "For Colored Girls" I initially scoffed and refused to offer up a penny to watch this movie. But after it's release, I had heard overwhelmingly positive feedback about the movie from peers (mostly black women) and friends - So, I decided to watch the movie because Tyler Perry never ceases to entertain me ;)
First and foremost, I must say that IF YOU ARE A MAN YOU (probably) WON'T APPRECIATE THIS MOVIE. This really is the type of movie you watch with your girlfriends...or even by yourself (that way when you cry, no one you know will witness it).
There were many strong points in the movie, but there were also some cringers..
Cringe-tastic/Eyebrow Knitting Moments: 1, One big blotch that stands out in this "masterpiece" is the awkward recitation of poems, most of which weirdly placed to fit certain circumstances. In fact, the first two poems that were said, I didn't even understand because there was such an abrupt transition from modern day talk into elaborate, flowery, (and dramatic)storytelling.
2, The problems discussed in this movie (abusive relationships, date rape, broken relationships, abortion) are not just limited to black women. These issues are universal, and I'm not sure I really see the need to label the whole movie "For Colored Girls" And as a black women, I would like to see black women portrayed in a more positive/influential light.
Despite those main burps, this movie had some notable moments. 1, The acting is superb - from everyone. Normally, I'm not a fan of Janet Jackson or Kerry Washington, but I must say that every actress gave a phenomenal performance in this movie. I would say that Janet has definitely grown as an actor, and I respect her more after watching this movie.
2, The movie makes you think, and each women's situation leaves you with a different lesson. Amongst some of the lessons viewers learn: (1)Don't trust someone you barely even know. (2) Get involved! If you see someone being abused - get help. If you see your child going down the wrong path - guide them in the right direction. (3) If a man's not treating you right, leave him! No one deserves to be treated like a doormat or a punching bag. (4) Take Responsibilites for your actions. If you've made a mistake, don't deny it and keep making the mistake over and over...and most importantly MOVE ON WITH YOUR LIFE. What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger (and that is the truth.)
Some people say that this movie is an insult to black men. I say, this movie is not about black men. It's about women in pain experiencing difficult situations, and surviving through it. The lack of great black men should not be important since this movie's central idea is not about great black male role models.
Overall, I think the movie was pretty okay, especially considering that the director had the difficult task of transforming a play into a film. I would recommend, as others have said, watch the movie for yourself. Come to your own conclusions, and don't walk into the theater with a closed mind or a fixed attitude.
=D
Sex and the City 2 (2010)
A little less than average....
It's a known fact that the sequel to any movie is never as great as the original, but after watching the first movie (which I thought was pretty decent for being based on a TV show) I was really eager to see the second one. However, my doubts about this movie kicked in within the first 10 minutes, starting with the surprising (and awkward) cameo of Liza Minelli dancing (and even more awkwardly singing) to Single Ladies. After that, every scene seemed to be one face palm after the other between the cheesy humor and dramatic story lines. In fact, one of the things that I think dimmed this movie's spark was the outrageously unrealistic situations in which each of the characters were put in - like Miranda quitting her privileged (and cushy) job as a lawyer to become a full time stay at home mom -.- And did I mention how ungrateful they were this in movie? I mean Big gets Carrie a turnable flat-screened TV for their anniversary and she's pouty because it's not jewelry. Another irritating characteristic - the fact that every single character in the movie had an irritating trait. Want me to list them? OK: Carrie was being a whiny little baby about everything Big did, Miranda became a walking travel guide/manual/dictionary , Charlotte took stupidity to another level, and Samantha only spoke in one-liners. I mean, it is hard to like a movie when you can't even stomach the four main characters.
Long story short, the movie had it's thrillers and shocks but the outcomes tended to provoke audiences into a yawn or a frustrated rolling of the eyes. But I will give it to each woman in the movie...they looked fabulous, and the movie as a whole made me appreciate the joys of female life. And maybe - just maybe, I can grow up to be like one of them....rich, sexy, with 3 best girl friends - and still having drama.
Why Did I Get Married Too? (2010)
Definitely deserving of more than a 2.4
I actually had pretty low expectations for this movie going into it. I thought the first one was alright, but as everyone knows - sequels are often half as sufficing as the original movie. I was never a fan of Janet Jackson's acting, but I must say that in this movie she did a damn good job in her "angry black woman" role. There's a scene where the character playing Janet's (or Patricia's) husband, Terry,is waiting outside of his house, and his friends come to help him move, and they're like "You wanna go inside and get your things?" And Terry says, "Yea.", then he proceeds to throw a flower pot through his front door in order to get inside. So, his friends are like "Aw, damn...we didn't sign up for this." And they're all scared of what may happen, when suddenly this scraggly haired thing shows up behind them, and it's Janet! I swear, everyone in that movie theater jumped out of their seats.
However, I feel it is my duty, to warn everyone: The ending is crap. It seemed as if Tyler Perry had one hour left to make the movie, so he literally just said "Oh, crap! We gotta wrap this up...gotta fix it!" So, basically Janet sends her husband this birthday present (which is actually really random when I look back on it), and then he's so embarrassed and insulted by this present that he runs out of his workplace, gets in his car, speeds into oncoming traffic and gets hit by a truck. What starts this unrealistic, un-genuine ending, is the "I smell poop" face that Janet makes before she starts crying. I couldn't help but chuckle. But then, they're in the hospital...Janet's talking about how she didn't want this to happen - and she literally pushes the other to female characters in attempt to get them to resolve their issues and she says "Fix it! Fix it!" And just like that, all their problems (cheating, lying, deception) solved in a simple hug. And then 5 seconds later they're on a beach at Gavin's funeral sending off balloons that I guess represented Gavin's soul (I wasn't paying attention, I was too busy calming down from laughing at the previous scene). And then, the movie ends with Janet meeting the Rock.
However, although the ending takes away a lot from the movie, the movie still leaves with its integrity. It was hilarious, shocking, sometimes both, and it kept you watching. I recommend you go see it(just leave before the last 3 minutes of the movie).
The Clique (2008)
As unrealistic as the book
I held very low expectations for this movie, as the book was no where near READABLE to me. For one thing the plot is so unrelatable. How many girls watching this movie are white, "beautiful", rich, mean, and "smart". Umm, can you say NONE? No girl ,that I know of, is as mean and heartless as Massie Block and her pathetic "Sheep Committee". Obviously, the author was going for an exaggerated depiction of what "cool, rich girls who go to Private School" are like. The acting was annoying, amateur, and unbelievable, as are the characters in the book. I find it very painful to watch such a clueless "sweet" little new girl get walked over by a bunch of rude wannabes. I mean, honestly, I think you know when someone isn't your friend. The movie is fairly predictable, and fulfills the low expectation meter. So, I guess if you loved the book, you'll like the movie.
