Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
No movie is perfect but I give it 10 stars
Sure you can find fault with anything if you want to but why? Sometimes a movie comes along and is so satisfying for what it is, that the critics have no leg to stand on. It's a really rare feat to make a movie like that. It's even rarer to make a sequel to a movie like that.
This movie is fantastic!! If I had a recipe on how to create a flawless sequel correctly, it would be this movie.
* include old characters
* don't let the film take itself too seriously
* start off quick and pull the audience back into the universe of the first movie.
* introduce new characters and make them loveable or despicable
* understand the genre, it's an action movie, not a poetic magnum opus Drama.
* shoot the action scenes in the most beautiful and captivating way
possible
* don't overly complicate the plot, let the cadence be similar to
the first movie
* let the actors be the professionals they are and give life to the script.
* do just enough to suspend disbelief
* include emotional music and tie-ins
* include homage to legendary scenes from first movie
* realistically portray characters and what has happened
to them in the many years past
* take the tragedy of the first movie and resolve it with
a redemption arc, showing a different side of the main character, that
no one thought would be possible, and make it compelling as hell.
(this worked insanely well because this has been an unresolved emotional conflict for both the main character and the audience since the last movie in the 1980s!)
* Show the consequences of failure and the courage it takes to let
go of past ghosts.
* Show how the modern Naval Aviation has progressed and don't ignore the reality of pilots being automated in the future and what that fear does to our servicemen.
The first Top Gun was a huge success because it resonated with the American Psyche. We were all rooting for them to succeed because we know that at the end of the day they are the heroes we send to fight and die in battle for us. They have the gravest and most solemn responsibility. They know it too and deserve to be cocky.
This Top Gun is no different. In fact I had the same exact feeling of utmost respect and walked away from the movie proud of the brave men and women of our Armed Forces!
Bravo to everyone who worked on and produced this masterpiece!
Detour to Terror (1980)
This movie was ridiculous
This movie is an idiotic attempt at some kind of action thriller. A tour bus on its way to Las Vegas is attacked by a group of white trash hijackers driving dune buggies. They drive them out into the desert and then steal all of their valuables. The plot changes constantly. One minute they are looking to kidnap a rich ranchers daughter, the next they are looking for a collectible stamp worth 90,000 dollars. The dialogue is horrible.
Please don't watch this movie.
