Skyline (2010)
A Masterpiece of 2010...in opposite world.
I agree with a previous poster in saying that most of what comes out now is CRAP. Lazy "action" sequences with a shaky camera posing as action, derivative and uninspired stories, awful awful dialogue, and most offensive of all...stale popcorn.
Anyway, this movie is misunderstood. a masterpiece, if you understand it. In order to 'get' this movie you must assume/do the following:
1. This is a special effects company's resume, not a movie with a linear storyline (or story) 2. The people in the movie are on some kind of drug that inhibits or completely restricts rational thought, consistent purpose and/or need for survival. 3. The special effects are really good for a giant TV movie 4. Bring headphones and an IPOD and rather than listen to the dialog, listen to Pink Floyd's "The Wall", it makes PERFECT SENSE. 5. The people in the condo are actually the aliens and the sky thingys are the HERO's trying to save us from their existence!
SPOILER below:
The only brain being eaten is the MOVIEGOER'S!
30 Days of Night: Dark Days (2010)
Straight to DVD and then straight to the garbage...
Oh the pain... I am such a fan of movies...and of vampire movies as a genre. This movie offends me as a movie fan AND as a vampire movie fan!
30 Days of Night (the original) was a very fun watch. I was excited to see that a sequel was made. Less excited to see that it was straight to DVD, and even less excited to see none of the original actors. I would compare it to the first movie, but that would be an injustice. Plus, the first movie had a relatively tight script, great to decent acting, a PLOT that made sense and dialogue reminiscent of actual human speech. Also, one of my favorite things to find in movies: characters that act within the realm of the suspension of disbelief!
This sequel (groan) has none of the above. HERE BE SPOILERS!!! From the ridiculous vampire hunters that hunt AT NIGHT IN LOS ANGELES??? to Stella and her weird attempt to bring out vampires with her meetings and then sleeping soundly in a motel, to taking on vampires with a couple guns knowing "they only slow them down" in TEE SHIRTS???. What???? And why NO ONE USES THE UV lights as weapons en masse...I don't know. I could go on...but there's way too much and it will be light soon.
if you are hungry for recent vampire movies that don't make sense, this is perfect. Otherwise, I'd go rewatch a classic vamp movie...even blade 2 or 3 again with the time this movie will waste.
I really wish I could see what the positive reviewers got out of this "movie"....the acting and script still make me gasp!
Please please Hollywood...watch before you print and release! btw, I gave a "2" because there were some good camera angles and lighting efforts.
sorry,
Looking for my Near Dark DVD
Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009)
am i missing something???? did the more than 3 stars people actually see the movie????
I gave it 2 of 3 stars because Rhona mitra was in it. The other star was for some random pieces that were good, mostly the nod to movie number 1 and Lucian. Viktor, who I love to hate...at least how Bill plays him, was given such poor lines and scenes, it was almost impossible to enjoy the character!!
Anyway, I'm curious if the director actually saw the first two movies. If he did, he apparently decided not to capitalize on the reasons that people seemed to enjoy them and go off on what is saddingly (yes, i know..) becoming a staple in todays action movies..INCREDIBLY LAZY ACTION SCENES!!! They seem to go like this:
Director: "Okay...action!!!" Some idiot: "There's doesn't seem to be enough action" Director/editor/cgi dude: "Okay, move the camera really fast, don't let any of the actors actually learn any sequences, Blur in, Blur out, throw fake blood, move camera faster, zoom, unzoom, rinse, repeat" Some idiot: "Cool!! I can't tell what's going on, it MUST be awesome action!!"
So take some of that crappy action, write some weak plot that follows the base of the other story, but fails to provide anything interesting to commit to, make the film so dark and gritty that you need a bath afterward, take away any romantic, sexy, coolness factor from the vampires, make all the lead characters idiots (is Viktor really that dumb???? is Lucian really that poor a strategist? Why are the vampires using swords??????
Okay...the first two, contrary to many posts here, were very successful films. I personally enjoyed them for the cool factor of the action sequences, the werewolves/vampires and the way they were presented, the sexuality of Kate's character and her! The well integrated music, sounds, action and sheer fun of the movies.
This version of it has NONE of that...in MY opinion.
I might not be so angry if these new directors would get OFF their collective butts and stop with these useless action sequences. If you take those out, it's just a regular boring movie that you can't see anything, don't really care about the characters and has poor dialog...but has Rhona Mitra and Michael Sheen in.
There. I said it.
Now I have to go watch 1 and 2 to see if I can erase the memory of this from my mind. I'll also have to watch Doomsday (YES! I know...not so good either, but at least there is some daylight) just to get Rhona back on my good side.
