The Little Mermaid (I) (2023)
6/10
Could've have been a mostly flawless classic
27 May 2023
*Spoiler free*

Let's start with the good; Halle Bailey en Jonah Hauer-King. They really gave it their all, and managed to turn in honest performances, especially Halle sing these classic songs I knew from childhood, really made me tear up. And their chemistry was off the charts delightful.

I loved Noma Dumezweni as Queen Selina, Art Malik as Grimsby, and of course Melissa McCarthy, as Ursula simply played honest rwally well when needed, and gave bigger performances when needed.

And that's the glue that hold this movie together in my opinion.

The bad:

Javier Bardem as Triton is just teriible, no emotion, nothing. I dreaded his scenes. Just teriible.

Sebastian not being played by an actor with a caribbean background who would have natural caribbean accent, now it feels like a caricature. This just feels so wrong, I'm from a caribbean cultured country, just no.

I'm sorry but awkafina is annoying in anything she's in, can we stop with her please. Her acting is good enough to overcome this.

Scenes felt rushed, especially the scenes when there has been a fall out, we didn't linger to see the actor really show what the characters where feeling. We cut to next day/next moment scenes. I remember saying oh but what about, ok Neverending because the next scene was starting.

Overall an enjoyable film when expectations are lowered, the flaws can be overlooked helped a lot by the wonderfull performances I noted eary on.

This show grew on me:-)
7 October 2010
When i first saw this show i too thought, like so many others, it was going to be really lame. First of all i'm from Europe: i didn't know Keke Palmer. After watching a few episodes this show grew on me.

Like many have already said the cast has great chemistry. The writing isn't always "outstanding":quite an overstatement there lol! But what keeps it together, for me, is this wonderful talented cast.

When i look back at Kenan an Kell or a corny show like Saved by the bell (yes i'm from that time period and yes i loved it!) what was it really about? The stories at times (or most times) were not that good: It was meant to make you laugh, and laugh i did!!

So I do agree the writing needs to improve when it comes to the jokes/storyline. But i don't think that this show is really THAT bad in comparison to other shows (i-carly,big time rush, sonny with a chance).

Conclusion this show (for me) does what it's supposed to do: have children/families enjoy themselves for thirty minutes or so nothing more nothing less!

Very good book made into a bad movie!
19 February 2009
I reside in Holland. I had this DVD shipped to me, because i heard about Lynn austen's book being made into a movie . . man how sorry i was for spending my money on this . .with all respect to the book which is outstanding.

This movie to me had nothing to do with the book, it was just another feel good movie . .with a very uninspiring end. I think the casting of eliza was wrong . .sydney penney didn't feel like eliza to me throughout the entire movie. Jason kendrick (i hope that's how you write it) was better cast but didn't have a lot to work with in this movie. I love the woman who played aunt Batty, liked her a lot actually . But again she had little to do in this movie.

My advice; i would skip this movie, it has nothing to do with the book story-wise.
