Mean Girls (2024)

What the Eff-fetch?

I purposefully avoided watching the trailer for this movie. I was in high school when the first one came out, and it has stood up to the test of time. As a teacher myself, it has been so neat to see how this movie has resonated with every single generation since its release. If I ask a group of middle schoolers, or high schoolers to write about a villain, Regina George will be in the submission pile.

I also love a good musical; this was not that. I know they are trying to bring the Broadway to the screen, but this was awful!!! There are a few cameos, but it puts the whore in horrible. It is not cohesive, and the majority of jokes are just a recycle of the original. The songs are like a made for tv Disney, but not a good one. In the end, Mean Girls 2 deserves a Razzie more than a rating.

He Never Died (2015)

He may not die, but you'll wish you had

Why the hell are there so many positive reviews? This was honestly one of the most boring films I've ever tried to get through. I got about 45 minutes in and then gave up. The entire story just never takes off. Also, he's supposed to be desirable to multiple women, while he treats them like crap. I wanted to like it, but it just kept dragging on and on without really going anywhere. I wish the dialogue was as good as some people said it is, but really, it's just dry, with a couple of basic lines, trying to carry a rambling plot. Not sure if he's supposed to be an angel or a fallen angel or a demon ... That's not a spoiler, by the way, as this is hinted to from the very first scene of the film.

Trying to get into Season 2 and it is ROUGH
7 February 2024
I liked the first season. It was slow starting, but I eventually got into it. The issue I'm having is that I HATE Luke. He drives me nuts! His mom, Aneesha, isn't much better. Mitsuki's character is somewhat interesting, but her plot points are SLOW. The best part of the show is the kids in the UK, but they don't appear often enough. So, I honestly don't know if I'll be able to keep going. It is so sad because I wanted to like season 2. I agree with all the people who are saying that the bulk of this show is too drama focused and not focused enough on the threat posed by the aliens. It just doesn't feel all that realistic. Throw in the interactions between the new knockoff UN and Nikhil Kapoor and it is just a bit silly.

A diamond in the rough

I have lived in Africa and traveled through Africa as a white woman. I have not spent time in Ethiopia, though I have spent quite a bit of time in Egypt and Morocco. What I loved about this film, and the novel upon which it is based is that it points out the inherent privileges of some while also speaking to the universal experience of grief, loss, and faith. The acting was superb. The story is honest and heartfelt. I recommend giving it a try.

Chaos Walking (2021)

I surprisingly loved this.

Okay, so I will admit that I have read this book series. I was hopeful that when the film came out they would do justice to the book while cutting out some of the elements from the novel that did not make sense (sorry Patrick Ness).

This movie surpassed my expectations. They stayed true to the world building and kept the characters true to the story, but they also did a lot of character building that had left me dissatisfied when I read the novels.

I love how they depicted the noise and added a more human element to the characters, not having them as driven by baseless fear. It makes me sad to see how poorly this film is doing in the box office. I like it and was entertained from start to finish. A great adaptation!

Glee (2009–2015)

Glee-tastic
6 October 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Last year I was reluctant to get into Glee. I love music and musicals, and music has been a big part of my life. My biggest worry was that it would turn into a show with a whole lot of poor and mediocre performances with a couple good ones thrown in to keep people watching. I waited until the entire first season was complete and available on DVD before I decided to chance a single disk of episodes.

Now, I am hooked! What a wonderful show! The actors are so talented, the music does not feel overly modified, and the songs are so varied that I don't know which genre I will hear next. Not only that, but I am so happy that the show actually tackles real life issues and dilemmas: homosexuality, abortion, teen pregnancy, adoption, marriage, family (in its many shapes and forms), and most importantly faith.

Grilled Cheesus SPOILER I am a religious person, but in this day and age that is difficult. So many opinions exist, and they all have a valid point. I was ecstatic to see Glee tackle the many faiths and spiritualities in the melting pot that makes up modern society. The show deftly maneuvered the very thin line between political correctness and the reality of so many faiths and outlooks converging, and how this convergence affects the interactions between and among individuals. Great show!
