Wit (2001)
I avoid this type of movie but I was enthralled and fascinated.
Having seen this, I would hesitate to go for chemotherapy where there is a low chance of success, I hope I never have to put this sentiment to the test. It would have been easy for this film to fall into the sentimental, melodramatic mush of Hollywood however Mike Nichols as usual has done an excellent job.
The film was intensely clinical, the performance by Emma Thompson was stunningly believable, casting her as a Professor of English was a piece of genius. Her seeking solace in Donne's poetry, and her analysis of medical terminology, a reaction and retreat from the cold treatment of the Researcher / Doctor team one of whom considers a course in bedside manner a waste of time!
It is all to real to me as the 16 year-old son of a friend is currently undergoing the heaviest level of chemotherapy for Leukemia. This film was a real experience for me, normally I would avoid this type of movie but I was enthralled and fascinated.
The Sea Change (1998)
A good romp
Like the first reviewer, I think this was a real fun film and I would echo that the best parts were the scenes dealing with airport security and airline staff. It shows well the all too common frustration when one remonstrates with personnel who want to treat you like cattle in a slaughter-house, and of course they have the upper hand and do not hesitate to use it. I don't think this will ever be an in-flight movie!
Sean Chapman overdoes the high-handed, arrogant banker a little but probably that was intentional, it made it hard to identify with him.
I would definitely watch this again.
