Whiplash (2014)
This will stick with you for life
There is something very, very special about this film. It's not the subject, not the musicals, it's the acting. J. K Simmons and Miles Teller are just so totally superb that, if you are not familiar with them, then you will wish to seek every other film that both of them are in. Both Teller and Simmons are so deep in this film, you will feel like you were involved, there. You'll be engrossed.
The drumming seems so genuine, so intense Teller is deeply involved, like so incredibly involved in the music scenes, the rooms created for rehearsal allow you to focus only on the emotions, effort and reactions and of course the interaction between Simmons and Miles.
An absolute gem, it's right up there with Forrest Gump.
Granite Harbour (2022)
Generic, nice optics, nothing Aberdeen about it.
The optics are sharp, filming nice and smooth, the drone shots really nice, but there's something immature about the whole thing. I'm not hearing any Aberdeen accents, it's like everyone was shipped in from everywhere but Aberdeen to act in this series. The one guy that is claiming be be from one of the less desirable areas of Aberdeen, has an accent that is not Aberdonian.
There's nothing intelligent about this, from the obviously made up name of the police force, to the fake looking police uniforms, bad jokes that are just not funny, to the actual bad acting and non standard protocols like the policeman demanding a press photographers camera by shouting "give me that".
I've watched this for just over 13 mins, I had expected an intelligent murder mystery series based in Aberdeen, it could literally have been filmed anywhere, the acting is terrible and there are no Aberdonians in this, come on guys, be original.
The music is far too upbeat for this too, doesn't seem to fit in.
As mentioned, the filming is nice, that's it, don't bother.
