9-1-1: Buck, Bothered and Bewildered (2024)
Alone, watching this episode, literally yelling "DO IT" at the TV!!
I generally stay out of the forums and don't look up spoilers for shows. I like to be surprised. Tonight I was stunned! I did NOT expect Buck's storyline to take that turn but I'm thrilled it did! At one point, earlier, I thought "C'mon, Buck! You're behaving like a jealous girlfriend!" Well, heck. I was in tears when Athena broke the news to the woman who'd had the fall in the garden. The acting on both parts was superb. As the mom of an adult son, I FELT that storyline. Just when I think the show can't get any better, it proves me wrong and I've never been happier to be proven wrong! Chim's man-crush during the opening was adorable! I did find the transformation in Harry a bit jarring and unrealistic. I realize the role is now played by a different actor but they aged the character far too much, in my opinion.
9-1-1 (2018)
I've been watching from the start and it just keeps getting better!!
This is my absolute favourite TV show. It has everything! Humour, romance, action, explosions, natural disasters, humour (yes, I know I wrote humour twice but it's a VERY funny show!) , relatable storylines and kick-butt medical content. If any couple in the history of television deserved as many chances as a room full of cats have lives it's Bobby and Athena. The actors are absolutely incredible and completely believable in their roles and, the lost art of the cliff-hanger has been resurrected in this show! Season 7's 3-part opening has me on the edge of my seat!! I don't like every character, Christopher is really getting on my nerves lately, or every storyline but the parts I don't like are few and far between. The good parts definitely far outweigh the bad so I have given it 10/10. It may not be the perfect show but it's the perfect show for me!
Barbie (2023)
An unexpectedly touching and uplifting movie!
I was never a fan of Barbie. I was a tomboy as a kid and the closest I had to a Barbie was the Donny and Marie Osmond celebrity dolls from Mattel which I never actually took out of their boxes. I preferred reading a book up in a tree or playing with my pets or baking rather than playing with dolls.
I saw the movie tonight and I absolutely loved it! I will definitely watch it again. It openly dealt with some of the more 'questionable' Barbie releases by Mattel as well as acknowledging people like me who aren't really Barbie fans. You don't need to be a Barbie fan to enjoy this movie.
The casting is perfect. Margot Robbie IS Barbie. From Helen Mirren as the Narrator to Will Ferrell as the Mattel CEO, Kate McKinnon as Weird Barbie to Rhea Pearlman as Ruth Handler. Absolutely perfect casting.
A great blend of humour and nostalgia with a touch of pathos. A feel-good movie that I thoroughly enjoyed. I would definitely recommend it!
P.S. Your Cat Is Dead! (2002)
A disappointment.
Sadly, the movie doesn't come close to matching the brilliance of the book. As a stand alone, it's just okay. As an adaptation, it is terrible. I was a fan of the book for 20 years before the movie came out. I was very excited to hear it was being made into a movie. I really like Steve Guttenberg but he couldn't save this project.
The Clan of the Cave Bear (1986)
Jean Auel is still spinning in her grave!
I just finished re re re (etc) reading the book and made the horrible mistake of watching the movie right after. You need to have read the book to understand what's going on in this movie but if you've read the book recently and enjoyed it you probably won't enjoy the movie. Ishtar is my favourite movie and I think THIS is a piece of crap. I fully understand why Jean Auel hated it. It's just wrong from start to finish. Very little is explained and even less is accurate with the book. Darryl Hannah was 25 when she made this. Ayla was.10 or 11 when she had Durc!! Ayla in the movie gives birth to Durc alone in a cave after being cursed for using a weapon and there is no mention of how Durc got his name. What? If you loved the book, don't watch this movie. It's a flat out insult.
Ishtar (1987)
Have you seen it?
Almost every time I tell someone that Ishtar is my favourite movie I get the same response. "That movie is horrible!" Yet when I ask "Have you seen it?" The answer is ALWAYS "no". If people would just give it a chance I believe they would be pleasantly surprised. The song lyrics alone are worth their weight in gold. I never knew that my ability to play the accordion was what stopped me from getting into a rock and roll band before I saw this film. I saw it in the theatre when it was originally released and have been a fan ever since.
CSI: Crime Scene Investigation: Bittersweet (2011)
Contains Spoilers - Writers out of ideas?
In the early 90's I lived in Welland and commuted to St Catharines every day to work. I crossed the bridge where Leslie Mahaffy's body was found (dismembered and encased in cement) a dozen times a week. Trying to give Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka a fair trial (they should have been gut shot and left to rot in my opinion) most facts of this case were kept from Canadians. The only information we were able to get was in the form of newspapers from the USA that managed to get smuggled across the border (much like Bernardo used to smuggle illegal cigarettes). After the trial all the gory details were released but, until then, we had no info about the monsters who raped and tortured over a dozen girls and women. They killed three but, as the Scarborough Rapist, Bernardo raped over 18 women and those are just the ones we know about. If you want to know more about the actual case the best book I've found on the subject is called "Lethal Marriage" written by Nick Pron. CSI writers using this horrific case: one of the darkest, most disturbing times in Canadian history; as the basis for one of their episodes is beyond atrocious! It's downright disgusting. If this is the level CSI has sunk to, I'm done with them. This episode was a terrible idea from start to finish.
Casualty: Love Is the Drug (2013)
Spoiler alert!!! Spoiler alert!!!
I have completely lost respect for Charlie. Where did he get his marijuana facts? Reefer Madness? Every single 'fact' that he quoted about marijuana is absolutely false. I'm resisting the urge to use caps but this kind of blatant idiocy sends the pro-marijuana movement back decades. As a licensed user with severe Fribromyalgia, degenerative disc disease and chronic nausea (from the 'legal' medications I take for the first two illnesses) I'm furious. Charlie's statements: 1. "Marijuana is between 40 and 60% more powerful these days." Wrong. The average THC content in today's marijuana is around 3.5%. If today's marijuana is ten times more potent than it was in the Sixties, then the marijuana being smoked back then would have had hardly any THC in it at all which is obviously false 2. "Marijuana is highly addictive." Wrong. It is a proved fact that marijuana is far less addictive than chocolate or alcohol. 3. "I'm talking about your mental health" and "One of the side effects of long term cannabis use is paranoia" Partly wrong. Mrs. Fosters husband is getting calls from a mystery person and he's being very secretive about it. She is chronically ill and always in pain. Thinking he's cheating isn't from the pot, it's just common sense. And then Charlie comes up with this little beauty 4. "Pain is the body's way of telling us something is wrong. It's not a good idea to block it out altogether". As someone who has chronic debilitating pain I wanted to reach into the TV and give Charlie a flat handed slap upside his head!! Mrs Fosters joints (no pun intended) are being eaten away by arthritis leaving bones rubbing on bones and Charlie thinks she should just deal with it. Such a shame that none of the writers could be bothered doing a bit of research on the topic of medical marijuana. This could have been a stellar opportunity to educate people but instead they produced a storyline that is just insulting. Most episodes I'd give an 8 or 9 out of 10. This one gets a 2 for the sole reason that it was hilarious to watch Robin on pot cookies. Otherwise the Foster storyline was a complete waste of time.
